Two definitely gets my vote. I just love how shiny it is compared to some of the others.
4 I guess...
Needs to be A LOT slimmer though. Although, none of them look like the rings in the original Sonic 2. =\
I vote for three, mainly for me it looks more like Sonic 2 (or basically, I don't play Sonic 2 much)
1 doesn't look like it's the right colour and has far too much contrast, 2 is glossy to the point where it looks ridiculous (that's not metal, it's enamel), and 4 and 5 look too fat.
However, if number 3 could be blended (not replaced) with number 5's colors it would be perfect.
No vote from me. None of them are close to original Sonic.
I've placed my vote.
Why did a deadline need to be put in place? The rings are so vital to the game they need to be perfect. They are all nice rings but in my opinion not close enough to the original sprites
This. Null vote from me.
Well the rings can be changed as the game is developed further, right (e.g. Once a prototype is released, it is possible to change the ring design later on, without rewriting the whole programming from scratch)? Even if the ring that's chosen soon is placed in the game, it's not final. So, there's no need to worry about the rings now. Just keep making ring designs as development progresses, and when the final product comes along, we can start panicking.
Anyway, we'd have a better judgement of all designs in motion once we see a prototype.
This is as much a more definite way for us on staff to get a feel for the rings preferences as it is a means for the project to move on to the next piece. We've seen some great rendering talent shine through as a result of this, and the next piece on the agenda will make great use of that.
Depending on the views expressed here and in the WIP thread over the duration of the poll, the ring with the most votes may not prove to be the final version. It will be approved and uploaded to the database, which may also apply to the one with the second most votes. We've never called any piece finalized without room for improvement, and I'm not about to start that trend now. But it is time to move on.
Yeah, you could even give players an option to select different styles of rings if you wanted to implement something like that.
It would be nice if we had the original ring sprites up there to compare, but other people have already noted that none of them really matches the original.
You should show the original sprite so people would at least know why they're voting what they see.
This poll makes no sense without that, sorry.
They all look too much like plastic. I don't blame the creators, though, I was trying to get something more metallic looking, but to no avail.
Considering that the hoax S2HD is based on actually had improved graphics, maybe we shouldn't be selecting the ring nearest to the original, but the one that actually looks the best =P
I liked the 3's shading the best, but I think if it had the shape of 4 that it would look better.
I vote 4 because my eyes were fooled into telling me that you ripped a ring from Heroes. :v:

ICE's blurry S1 special ring
You guys can clearly see how the special stage ring from S1 looks a lot like the regular rings right? The S3K rings look exactly like the special stage ring which obviously says they were aiming for that shape all along.
Let's not go by artwork, commercials, out-sourced games (Chaotix rings), or your own personal preference. Simply voting on what you like is not going to work in this case since some peoples desired interpretation stray far away from what's right in front of them. Keeping it as close to original as possible is really the option since this is such an important part of the game.
That said I think 4 has the closest shape though still not perfect. It could also use some sharper definition between the light, mid, and dark shades. (Dark shades don't need to be any darker; just the transition between levels of shade need to be more defined to help it look more metallic)
Separate names with a comma.
