While collecting rings in Endless Mine, Splats remembers Mystic Cave, from Sonic 2. When that game was being developed, he had to escape from his nemesis, the Ball, another leftover from the first Sonic the Hedgehog. Working as a game expansion and chronological prequel to Splats - Ring Hunter, this game takes place in Sonic 2's competition mode.
