So after some time and hashing out the many possibilities that were available, we've finally come to a new process for member registration. Instead of taking the quiz, we're going to try to use the validating forum system that's used at places such as SGMC to filter trial members. Basically, you'll need to show that you're capable of constructing a few basic sentences to get in and get your trial 20 posts. Pending Members will have a validating forum to post in and have had their temporary posting abilities in other forums withdrawn. That being said, we have had a disappointing trend lately of people being approved not because they're GOOD members, but simply because they're decent members. Therefore, the approval standard is also being bumped up—out of these 20 posts, it is expected that at least five of these posts will be good, full posts (think at least a paragraph, on-topic, relevant to our main discussion sections); that still leaves some posts for obligatory Member's Lounge post or two and chances to try to make good posts. Note that this is an experiment we'll be trying; if it doesn't work, the staff will regroup and look to other options or revert to the quiz system.
Probably? I like these changes, hopefully we will get more smart people here, and less hyperchris' (SSRG).
He was actually on RetroHack, and I fondly remember his ass..... He just waltzed in and thought everyone would do everything, even though he couldn't actually speak proper English. Anyway, this is actually a good idea, as the SSRG way is not fool proof, but with the addition of trial membership, makes it possible to further filter out the mentally challenged.
This idea sounds a lot better. But if it doesn't work, you can always go back to the quiz like you said. Either way, it doesn't bother many of use because we're already members =P
Not that my opinion matters much, but I think this system, if it works out for you guys, is fantastic.
Most of the time, the admins don't want to/forget to/don't have to time verify people. That makes the possibility of joiners alot thinner.
And so far, it seemed it worked. I think this idea is awesome. Administrators get a chance to look at what the member is like before approving. And plus, not all Sonic fans know a lot about the technical stuff behind Sonic.
True, but perhaps it'd be a stronger support if people who weren't directly benefitted by it thought it was a good idea. :P Myself I am waiting and seeing, as so far nothing bad has happened, unlike with that pending members shenanigans. But will good things happen either? That... we will have to see. Although I am a bit nostalgic for the things Simon did. Too bad he's gone, and so is the old name. :P
Sorry to bump the thread, but what was the quiz that one used to have to take? I'm curious to see what it involved.
It was a quiz about Sonic games / Mega Drive. It had: 2 Discoveries questions 2 Mega Drive technical questions 2 Sonic 2 Beta gameplay questions 2 Miscellaneous questions All questions gave four options, being only one the correct answers. You must have 7 correct answers to pass the test and access the registration form.
