What kind of involvement does Naka have with the current/upcoming games anyway, if any...

None. I think the way things worked, he looked at development of Sonic 06 on one day, and then he decided to jump ship and form his own company.

    Coincidence?

R2 will always be a mystery to me. I firmly believe there was supposed to be a level there somewhere and it HAD to be scapped early.

R2 is "Super Sonic Galaxy", Using quantum interference to allow the Sega CD to be as powerful as a Next Gen system, Naka will program the R2 to be Sonic in a SMG esque game with more Sonic elements. I say "will", because it hasn't happened yet. When he does, we will no longer remember Sonic CD ever missing R2. Nintendo will be just a memory (Hey, it make more sense than Sonic 06).

But Seriously, the music track with the bird noises would work fine for a ruin level. I can tell you for sure that those are not seagulls.

That music for me can be the Good Future of R2 .... And about Mercury Mines ... Wasn't it only in a hack done by Nemesis?

Yeah, no, living in the Bay Area, I hear seagulls everyday. Those aren't seagulls. Just birds.

Which would be suited to a jungle/abandoned ruins level.

And even if they WERE seagulls: so what?

The idea is that the song has sound effects of birds and running water, which really fits exactly what the song is named after—Little Planet. If you take a look at the image of Little Planet from the D.A. Garden, it shows that the Little Planet has a very upbeat, surreal, peaceful feel to it which the song perfectly represents, in my opinion.

Of course, musical interpretation is pretty subjective, but I don't think the song was meant for anything other than what it's used for. After all, R2 was scrapped rather early on—perhaps even before music could be made for it! And remember, it was never shipped in any public demo of the game, either, so the chances of seeing what little was done with are pretty slim.

It sucks that the level is so elusive, but there you go. :\

Was there any earlier screenshot of a Sonic CD Proto?

I only can find some that appear to be mock-ups:

The bonus stage picture looks to me like it's just an updated version of the Sonic 1 special stage, but with two "tiers" (with probably some sort of bumper object for moving between them) and a slot-machine mechanic that probably just handed out free rings and/or lives or something like that. If you look close, in the bottom right there's a block with what appears to be a U on it—like the "Up" blocks from Sonic 1—and on the very edge in the top left there's a R block. Given how much this game was inspired by Sonic 1 in other respects (sprite set, level design themes, etc.), that would make sense, no?
