So I just got a cheap "phat" psp with custom firmware. I have firmware "3.80 M33-5". So here are my questions about this, since I really don't know about this kind of thing and don't want to screw anything up. What is the best firmware to have? I noticed that some ps1 games won't run on what I have. (Ehrgeiz for example). How would I change my firmware to another version? I downloaded some preconverted ps1 games to play, but I noticed that multi disk games like FF7 and Chrono Cross have just one PBP file. How would I play the different disks? That's all I can think of for now.
It's to late to be thinking thoughts fffffffff... There isn't really a best firmware to have, but having the most recent custom firmware allows you to play more recent games, get the new features for the PSP, and with popstation, adjust which firmware it uses to emulate PSX games. Personally I haven't tried Ehrgeiz with my 5.02 m33, but with other games higher firmwares emulate better. Here's a useful link for upgrading custom firmwares. Even if this guide can't help you, some 13 year old kid will ask how to do it every hour or so in the help forum, so you'll be all set. I prefer manual installation, although some like to use the wireless upgrade from the PSP. The multi-disk PSX games can be converted into one PBP for the sake of not having to move the savestate to a PC emulator to boot the next disk to save another savestate to move it back to the PSP for the next disc... you get the idea, it's to save unnecessary confusion. Just finishing one disk should already tell the game that the next disc is in the console. Sleepy sleepy sleabsdfbhkjdfbhlkjdbf
3.80 M33-5 is not the most best firmware for running PS1 games. The best is actually either 4.01 M33-2 OR 5.00 M33-6. But they have their advantages and disadvantages. 4.01 M33-2's internal PS1 emulator is exactly the same as the 5.00's, on the plus side more homebrew seems to run stable on it, as certain emulators are quite unstable on 5.00 M33-X, but on 5.00 M33-X you can access the Playstation Store (on 5.00 M33-3 and later, a hack is implemented that allows for Store access without the latest firmware). I can't seem to think of any PSP game worthwhile since early-mid 2008, so 4.01 will be able OK for running PSP games. Different disks can be accessed by pressing the Home button in play and selecting the Change disk option (or something like that), even though the PSP doesn't allow you to do this until it is necessary (Even though I keep my multi-disk games on seperate "disks", e.g. as it saves space and on a game like FF7, its useless having Disk 1 when I am on Disk 2).
The guide is unclear and confusing to me since I really have no idea about this kind of stuff. I don't want to brick this thing by doing something wrong. I guess I should install "4.01 M33-2" firmware, because I don't care about the Playstation Store. This guide seems to only have instructions for "*Upgrading to 5.00M33-6". (I care mainly about homebrew and PS1 games, maybe some PSP games.) Also, the guide says to have it pluged into the AC adapter, but mine came with a strange plug, would the same plug used for xbox or ps2 work? I need help.
(Follow at own risk) I have no idea about the strange plug, but you don't need it plugged, the only requirement is to have the charge level 70% or higher. The only thing you have to do about upgrading is to download this custom firmware and this official firmware. The UPDATE folder in the custom firmware zip goes in the X:/PSP/GAME/ and put the 401.PBP official firmware file in the same folder. Now turn the PSP off. Turn it back on while holding the R button and the Recovery Menu comes up. Go to configuration and there is an option called "Game folder homebrew". Check if it is set to "(Currently 3.80)" if it is not, press X to switch it. Now you can go to the PSP menu, and go to GAME. On the list somewhere will be an option that says "PSP Update ver 4.01". That is what you run. After it unpacks everything, it goes to the updater. Just follow the instructions. When it finishes, press X to reboot. (Don't use the power switch or you risk bricking it, and also apparently leaving it on the "Press X to reboot" screen too long also bricks it even though it doesn't for me, to be safe just press X as quickly as possible)
The "charger" is two pieces: one hooks up to the wall (the universal Sony/game console charger cable), the other is a box and cable that connects to the PSP (to make it work, I guess it's voltage or something). But if you are lacking the part that goes into the wall, use a Dreamcast, Saturn, XBOX or PS2 power cable instead (it will work just fine). Also, for recovery menu, it's basically what lets you tweak the hardware and small software before the PSP loads the firmware (clock speed, where to load homebrew from, etc). But I do believe you hold the R button during bootup, I don't know if L works, the R button is universal for loading the recovery menu from a cold boot.
This gave me an error. Thanks anyway. I had to end up using this site because I guess there was something wrong with my psp. It's all fixed now. Thanks
That's really weird... because I was actually installing the custom firmware on my PSP while doing the instructions. I'm glad that it is working now though.
