Hey. Not to alarm anyone, but I just plain don't recognise #90 on Sonic 2 Beta. It sounds remotely like the Sandopolis Zone's music, and I was wondering whether the speculation is that it was intended for Dust Hill Zone? Of course, it could just be some track I've forgotten, so if it is, tell me I'm an idiot and we'll move on ;).

Oil Ocean zone in Sonic 2 final technically. Although it's easy to note that if there were one song in S2B that were to belong to a desert, it'd be THAT song. (The tune and tempo of it changes slightly in Sonic 2 Final for OOZ.)

Cool. Oh well. Maybe it was originally composed for DHZ then used for OOZ when it was scrapped? Guess it depends which one came earlier.

Actually, it might be irrelevant; think about it, you either compose the song when the level exists, or you compse the song ahead of time in preparation fo the level. Those Nick Arcade movie things showed that Emerald Hill once showcased Starlight Zone music, so a level may exist without the tune being ready. ;) And surely it can work the other way around. (They have DEATHEGG BOSS music in there after all! And they surely were not even close to being ready to do the actual boss...)
