So if ProSonic is supposed to be ready by two months' time, does that mean the Linux port will be ready by the end of the year or are you surprising us with a simultaneous release for Windows and Linux?

Well, if he announced that, I don't think it would constitute as a surprise :P

I was being cheeky when I asked if he was going to surprise us with a Linux release at the same time as the Windows one. I don't really mean it should be a surprise....

Well I don't know if a Linux release would even happen. I'd like to see it happen, but right now it isn't happening. Though I will say I have attempted it. Techokami deserves recognition on this front for giving it a shot. From what I understand, he came close to getting it to work!

    Ports will definitely happen though.

I'm not too sure if you've said it anywhere but are you planning on making the Engine open source like the Open Sonic engine, I'm sure then people might be willing to have a stab at porting it. :)

Definitely! That's always been the plan. The reason I haven't made it open source yet is because I want to get it to a certain state of development before making the source code public. I don't want people to use the source code just so they can figure out how I did one or two things so they can do that in their own fangame engine. If people are going to look at the source, I want to be confident that there will be people out there interested in improving my engine instead of someone elses.

What supporting libraries are used by ProSonic? (Ex. Hawk Network Library)

Why not Allegro 4.3.10 or Allegro 4.9.12?

HawkNL's latest stable is 1.68, but latest available is 1.7b1

NEW MAC OS RELEASE FOR 2009 -- http://dgrove.blogspot.com/2009/07/prosonic-for-mac.html

As you can see, I used the billboards I had talked about before. I used one VGM post on these forums because I couldn't find a use for any more than just one. I picked the one I felt fit the Attraction Zone best, but that's not to say I didn't like any of the others. Thanks for submitting stuff, I appreciate it!

Windows release (and updated Mac release if things go according to plan) will be available in September.

EDIT: It's important to note that only Intel MacOS X 10.5 will run this. It's the best I was able to do, but I'm told that most Mac users are using that version.

I just tested this on my Macbook Pro, works fine. Good stuff! The physics are feeling pretty accurate to sonic 2 now, the only things left are fixing up the centering of the animations and some various camera bits like the spindash effect etc. I'll reply in more detail once I've had a chance to look at it closer.

I appreciate that Taxman, thank you! I'll be anxiously awaiting your closer examination. I value your input.

There is a strategy behind all of this. But taking a quote that's nearly a year old and trying to relate it to what's currently going on just doesn't work. That's like people using my "outline" from 2006 to make claims about the 2008 release, which is in part why the hype got so out of control last year. Things have changed over time. I found CyberKitsune, who has been a very big help with this release. He's the guy who ported the engine. Not bad for a 14 year old!

I intentionally left out Windows users for this year's SAGE so that I don't take attention away from the September release I'm planning. You can think of this Mac release as a sort of "pre-release" of the September version. Like any pre-release version of anything, it's given out to a select group of people. Instead of giving myself the pain of having to hunt for people to test it all the time and barely get meaningful feedback in return, I made this surprise release to at least get some publicity on the thing so I could 1) get testers, and 2) bring attention to the upcoming September release. In my opinion, this version doesn't accomplish everything I wanted to accomplish, and I knew I wouldn't have it all by SAGE, so that's why I set the date for September. Still, why miss SAGE when it's a great promotional opportunity? And if the Mac testers say good things about it, then perhaps those with hard feelings from last year's release will come around this time and take the upcoming release seriously. Plus the fact that it's now available on Mac is news within itself since it was previously only a Windows product. So in September, people can most likely expect both a Windows and Mac release.

So anyway, that's the thinking behind it. The SAGE release is ultimately an attempt to promote the upcoming September version. That doesn't mean the SAGE version is complete junk or anything, because I have done a lot of work on it, but I'm simply saying the September version will have more.

I am still out of reach. I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 :psyduck:

Looks like I have to continue using stuff outside of home.

Read much? The article states it requires 10.5, and poster said they're using 10.4.

The 10.5 requirement is pretty much bogus and just means whoever ported it doesn't care enough to switch the SDK version, because Allegro is old as hell and doesn't require 10.5 to build.
