Looking forward to see what this release will contain. Out of curiosity, did you work out including Plane B into the release yet, or will you still only have Plane A available for use?

If you mean having stuff in front of Sonic... I should have worked that in! I'll have it the next release I make. That was one of the things on my to-do list, I don't know why I didn't get to it.

Actually, I meant the background layer. =P

But yeah, that's cool—I was just wondering. Do you have any specific goals for the next release that you'd like to achieve?

I have several in mind, but I haven't made any formal plans just yet. I'll be informing you all of what I'm going to do next in the coming days.

    BTW: ProSonic's available for download.

And don't forget to check out the first video tutorial -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbdVCeiT4Vw

Is the one on SAGE the new version? It's pretty nice.

I crashed it by falling off the screen.

    I don't think that's normal, somehow.

That version on SAGE is the latest, yes. It's mostly the past 3 months of work I've done to it.

That crash comes from the game reading data outside the appropriate memory space. The solution -- don't fall to the bottom of the level!

PROSONIC 68000.EXE has bridges which will help prevent falling to the bottom. However, it can crash randomly due to a memory leak I haven't yet found. So you're safer using the PROSONIC.EXE, which in this case has no bridges or other 68000 programmed objects.

Neither of the .exes will run for me. I try to run one, EHZ's music starts playing, and then it 'encounters an error and needs to close'. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO BITTERLY DISILLUSIONED.

Since this is the top post of the next page...

DOWNLOAD THE ENGINE AT SAGE IN THE BONUS SECTION!
Also, check out some of the other projects at SAGE. Some of them look pretty interesting to say the least!

PROSONIC 68000 includes the BLAST Programming Interface. This is essentially a "simulator" of 68000 instructions. Think of it like an emulator, except not quite an emulator. Bridges and some other objects function in this version (even though you can't see them).

PROSONIC does not include the feature described above. This is the most stable version of the engine. You're safer running this one if you're going to do level design or change the screen resolution and things like that.

    More to come...

Read the text file included for instructions on what the keys do. This will help you in exploring the different features of the engine. Don't ignore the text file!

This release is basically 3 months of work. I made a LOT of progress, even though I'll admit it's not where I'd like it to be by this date. I can assure you this pace of progress will continue. As I've said before, this release is intended to at least allow you to get started on a game or level. Updates to the engine will be on their way, with many new features, bug fixes, and other things. I'll talk about that stuff some more in the days ahead.

Don't fall to the bottom of a level -- it'll likely crash the engine. This is a bug I'll fix. If you witness any crashes other than the one I've described, LET ME KNOW!

Also, tell me what you like about this, and what you don't like about this. Be honest -- that's what will help me improve it!

Overall, I think this release will create some smiles. I've got much more in store for ProSonic in the coming weeks, so I'll keep you all informed on what's to come =)

I'll be working with Ritz. This is the first I've heard of this. Like I said above, let me know about any crashes, other than the falling-to-the-bottom one.

I tested the import art feature thing, there was some color loss. ;)

I really wish that both this and also E02 had a non in game level editor.

The reason for the color loss is you're importing stuff into a level that's only using 64 colors. I wanted to drop 256 color support and use 16-bit color, but I couldn't change it in time for this release. So I kept this release using 8-bit color. Now that it's out, I have the chance to make the engine use 16-bit color which will dramatically boost the amount of colors used and won't restrict you to a palette. That'll help. Keep your tiles though, because when the new color mode is supported, they'll import lossless.

I feel your frustration with the color though because I imported a picture of me, only to have me look like something in a Sega CD game.

Isn't E02 level export supported by SonED2? You could always use that.

Not sure how an external editor would work with ProSonic, though. It definitely would be nice to have.

I'm curious though, how is an external editor better? Personally I find it very convenient to have it all together, be able to switch between game mode and editing mode, test it on the spot, and do it all right there. But that's my perspective on it, gimme another perspective to look at.

I think what jman was saying is that it seems odd to release something, even a demo version, when the functionality is this incomplete...
There aren't any schedules but the ones you set yourself, so there's no need to release something when it's not quite ready to be shown off. I mean, the fact that you even set a release date would sort of imply that you'd got all the major crash-to-desktop bugs that you're aware of fixed.

Well, that's how I unterstood it, anyway.

You should also probably rename this thread, since it isn't "getting closer", it's here.

Editing the first post might also be a good idea.

I'm sure part of the reason that he set a deadline was to make sure he didn't stagnate too much in working on the engine. Without something to drive toward a set release date, it's easy to abandon these projects.
