Welp, this.
After over a year's work and several different incarnations, the staff at Sonic Retro has decided to discontinue the fangame Project: Sonic Retro due to a lack of distinguishable progress. We thank all of you for your interest in the project and encourage you to check out Sonic 2 HD, one of our other community projects.

Please note that any attempts to resurrect the project after this announcement will be stopped, and any advertisement of an offsite version is prohibited.

Somehow I'm not surprised.

Not that I could do jack shit to help the project along, given that we were planning to go with E02, and, well, I don't know how to USE that thing (even with Stealth's very detailed documentation for it) - meeting a "give us something playable by the end of the week" deadline was impossible and I think everyone knew it. Especially when Scarred came in and said he saw nothing of merit in the entire topic, even after video of a working engine test was posted.

Oh well. Long live it, I guess.

An archive would've been nice, though. In case somebody actually wanted all the art that HAD been done up to that point.

To be honest not a lot of people really cared about the project, it's had endless restarts and the forum was full of arguments. Even though some people tried to "save" the project, it just wasn't going to happen.

No I think alot of pople cared about the project, Soti. But as you said, the egos, the arguments, the dickery, and drama is what made people not care.

I was hoping it would last just so any pixel art I did do wouldn't go to waste.
So since the whole thing is over if anyone kept a copy of my stuff, feel free to use it. Just let me know before hand

Huh, all right. I'm cool with that.

There really was little hope after all. The Project Direction thread proved it.

RIP.

There definitely was a passion for making the title in the project. I was involved with it back when it was just another "Sonic 4." Internally, there really wasn't much work on the title. It was all people babbling on about levels, new shields, and drawing new art without really getting so much as a game engine roughly going. Yeah, the team was split between E02 and Sax's ProSonic, but it would at least make sense to get a working game engine first by using stock or mock up art before working on the more serious art or level concepts.

Pretty much, it was the long tempest of troubles, several changes in project heads and indecision on what to do that ultimately gave this project its execution. That said, if the team can actually get its act together and make a playable demo (something like one act) things may change. Who knows. The onus falls on the team: do you guys really want this game to happen or are you all still stuck with your heads in the clouds and drawing pixel art?

Once again, as I explained in the thread, this was caused by the sheer nature of the project. Community fangames in unproctured settings don't work.

If they want to get their game done they need to make a small team and go from there.

I'm not surprised. This project was a great idea and had a lot of potential, but the lack of a good (or at least decent) leader during its several incarnations couldn't do any good and ultimately killed it. There were some interesting developments near the end of its lifespan, with Chimpo, STHX, and their good ideas, but the project was already too ill to survive; unfortunately this didn't start with the right foot, so that going back on track was hard, too hard perhaps.
However, for ones who are still interested, read the fine print in Scarred Sun's post. She is not saying that P:SR is dead forever, but just that it won't receive any more support from this forum and that it can't be promoted here. This doesn't stop the project from being developed on some other board, presumably with a different name which doesn't involve the words "Sonic Retro". The sonic community is wide, and if enough people are seriously motivated to pull this off, it will happen sooner or later, although chances are very slim at this point.
I, for one, know that I have nothing to contribute, since I suck at graphics, and I can work only with modules for music, otherwise I'd be glad to step in and do my best to help whoever will be in charge should this project come back from the netherworld. About me being a project leader, I've been saying this since the very first thread, I know I would be very well suited for the job since I have good organizing skills, probably this project wouldn't have failed with me at the lead, and I'm not being presumptuous here, with a solid leader from the beginning instead of Phoebius I'm sure this project would have had more chances, but unfortunately most of the community don't like me, so I never nominated myself (and I'm not doing that now), because I knew that not everyone likes to work with an unpopular leader.
Either way, farewell P:SR, I will always remember you as Sonic 4.

This. Its more then obvious. Things never get done and ideas keep shifting. Its like putting a design to a group of marketing employers at once in a circle. Everyone has their own little opinion and you end with a mess.

Just out of curiosity, does this topic serve any purpose besides all the finger pointing that's going on? Because that's all that's going to come at this point.

On topic: AWWWWWWWWW MAN!

metalknux has a point --- maybe this thread will become like the many Project: Sonic Retro threads.

Now I do have two simple question and a simple request.

The simple question: has S2HD learned a lesson from P:SR, or does it need to learn one?

The other simple question: will similar projects between individuals or small groups be affected? Like will you still be allowed to make a hack trying to make a (maybe spiritual) successor to Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic CD? [possibly stupid, I know]

The simple request, and I apologize for echoing: an archive should be made available, or at least everyone's contributions be returned to them.

hmm.. I'm dissappointed, but not suprised.
This project did have some pretty cool stuff going for it, but it's death is completely understandable.

ahwell.

Well, as nineko said, there's still the chance for the project to continue, but it most likely won't be allowed to use Retro's resources unless the group can come up with a satisfactory or outstanding demonstration that they've got their acts together and can actually make the project fly. This shouldn't mean it's dead, buried, gone, move along.

Like I said earlier, the onus falls on the team that still wants to continue this, since I see a few of them in here already hanging up the towel.

That's one of the two reasons why I asked the second question! =P (The other was so that individual hacks could not be penalized.)

Of course I'd like to put up a team that could continue this. Who would like to join me?

Contrary to what people might think, the only real thing keeping the project down was a lack of willing and qualified leadership. Community projects, in fact, do work—the constant notion that they don't reflects a longstanding pessimistic criticism of the practice, which leads those involved in the projects to not even bother trying. The project had worked at several points in time, however, and with proper leadership could have continued in some form or another.

So to those of you who are trying to use this as some sort of stepping stool to say collaborative efforts never work—drop it. They do work; the only people incapable of grasping that concept are people like you. Stop being shallow and open up your mind to radical concepts once in a while.

As an amendum, I think it's rather pointless to speak in the past tense about how there was never a chance of the project to succeed—those who do are all just being bandwagoning gits, and we could do without your arrogant, smug attitudes. I wouldn't say the chance of this project coming back at a distant point in the future is totally out of the question, but it's certainly not going to be any time soon, nor with our current userbase.

I'd like to stress that, as mentioned above, any attempts to unofficially continue this project will not be endorsed or featured in any form on this website. Find somewhere else to leech talent from.
