We may need to further adjust it to fit tiles e/or colours to be coherent with the resting art.

#3 seems to be the most faithful, so it gets my vote.

The shadow colors in #1 are a bit too dull, and the darkest shadow in #2 seems a bit too bright.

Should've fixed that before I posted it, but you're right. Edited.

That said, this is about the color more so than the strength of the shadow.

I've got a better poll subject: When running at full speed, what's the likelihood of any of you spotting the difference?

Seriously, guys. This is why you haven't got anywhere yet.

Some people will actually notice. And besides, the idea of HD is adding more detail while preserving its original "self" if you will. Also, a community project should definitely take opinions when it comes to major things like art choices.

    • Since when is it an artist's job to cater to pedants?
    • That's the general idea of HD, sure, but managing vector art on a pixel level is completely asinine. The extra detail is already there; all that's changed here is the blurring of some edges and a transition between shades of brown that are completely indistinguishable to someone who isn't actively looking for a difference.
    • Major art choices. See above.
Honestly. This is the first time I've peered at this forum in nearly a year, and you guys have made virtually no progress. Are you just stalling for time or something?

Did you miss the 2 Tech Demos , New Art restyling & upcoming Alpha, Ritz?

That's how we work and how we'll share our enthusiasm & art with community.
Getting feedback is really the fastest way for us artist to improve our art, including specific opinions on details such as colour shades.

Could we do better, could we be better leading? I don't know and I don't honestly care as long as I see these results done in just one year, for the ambitious, yet concrete project S2HD is.

Time and hard work will tell how far and where we'll get! :eng101:

    Now please, back on voting.

EHZ is very nearly complete. The general lack of progress can be attributed to a handful of factors:

-Lack of focus in the early months, resulting in a number of badniks and a bit of level art that we won't be able to use until much later, and lots of talk that went nowhere.
-A shading revamp back in September, which required all existing art to be reworked.
-EHZ is a pain in the ass.
-A general lack of artists, especially ones that contribute frequently or have an interest in doing level art.

The first three issues are largely resolved by now. While I'd love to be able to crank out a zone a month or so, we just don't have the manpower. At any rate, when we're asking for the community's opinion on something like this it means we've reached a standstill, need feedback, and have moved on to something else in the meantime.

Vincent and Sciz did a great job with their explanations, and I'll add one just for good measure.

Either contribute to the project with a well thought out opinion or art asset to help move it along, or quit bitching. That helps no one, least of all completion of S2HD. We've come leaps and bounds recently, so kindly take the time to research what has been done before whining based on incomplete perceptions.

The third one maintains the colors of the shadowed object far better; the second is dull, and the first is almost greyscale.

LOL, I kinda see a trend here. I go with the flow on the 3rd choice. But it is simply because it is the best choice at hand!

1st looks to green to me, 2nd is way to black/dark. 3rd looks the best, the red in it makes it prettier than the rest.

3rd looks the most natural. So I'm going to have to agree with the rest of this topic. =P

Apparently! Having a working engine is great and all, but it doesn't really count for much if you're going to be completing zones at a rate of one per year. Lack of manpower is almost a valid excuse, but if that's the case, I'd worry less about tweaking every last tile to absolute perfection and just focus on getting shit done.

Despite the completely illogical "Put up or shut up" quip, I'll bite. My opinion was well thought-out. I've been thinking it out since the project first began, and I thought it was about time someone spoke up about it. You folks are some of the most fastidious nitpickers I've ever seen- I stopped paying attention to this project entirely back when I literally saw someone complaining over a single off-white pixel in the corner of Sonic's eye, and I come back a year later and nothing has changed. Seriously, let me emphasize this: had you shown me these tiles in sequence without telling me there was a difference between them, I wouldn't have noticed. This doesn't need to be discussed.

I need to do my research? Just where, exactly, is all this "progress" I'm missing? I sure as hell didn't do a thorough check the first time around, but even scanning through the topics now, aside from some work on individual sprites, I really don't think I've missed anything since I last checked a few months ago. I'm sorry if you guys don't want to hear this from me, but SRB2 is poised to put you guys to shame. Get your priorities straight, please!

That would be a great idea if we didn't consistently get better art out of the iterative feedback process. We aren't professionals, and most of us aren't even art students. I don't want to drag this project out for three-plus years, but I'd rather do that than start cutting corners and end up with half-assed zones full of inconsistent art. And since it seems to bear repeating, the development progress doesn't come to a halt every time we ask for opinions.

If you really want to speed this up, find us more artists willing to work a lot.
