Just a thought, what if the levels had real time day and night cycles? Like lets say level one starts off around noon depending on how long it takes you to complete each level it not only effects how it looks because of the time of the day but what levels you play through. Pretty much if it is taking you too long to progress through levels they would change into a bad version of that zone like sonic cd, or change the zone completely because eggman would have moved on to a different place. What do you guys think?

Has it been decided if this is going to be programed for? Computer? Megadrive? Or possibly something else like the DS or PSP?

If not it needs to be decided so everyone knows what limitations we are working with. Personally I would love to see it on the Megadrive, but I know that it might be impractical.

I don't think it has been decided. I say it needs to be done for the NeoGeo Pocket

    All the bitches.
I would assume PC, because it could then be ported to DS, PSP, Dreamcast, and Wii if the engine coder wishes.

Also, zeldrak, I changed a lot of the sprite. Zoom in, and compare.

I haven't been a part of this, but I just want to say going by the art I have seen pheobius do, plus the fact he's already headed a project of his own that looks like it was getting places, he'd make an excellent leader for this project. I don't know many others who have headed a project plus are an excellent artist at the same time, so he's definitely the choice IMO.

If this were going on Genesis, I doubt it could work as smooth as something started from scratch. The point of a new project would be something completely new from what already is out there, and hacking over another game I don't think can work so well. And I haven't seen anyone actually program a whole engine from the ground up in 68k yet. I'm assuming ProSonic is what everyone should go with here, as it apparently does have the possibility of porting back to roms(though I don't know if that means over a hack started already or what). That or the Retro Sonic engine. If this is supposed to be really thought of as a true sequel in spirit though, I can imagine a lot of people here are going to want it on the genesis(recalling how many people wouldn't let that discussion die when Sonic XG was making progress).

  7. Idealistically I say it should be done in a fashion that at least makes it -appear- like it can play on actual Genesis hardware, regardless of where it's going to in the end.

Honestly, I think it should look more like it could be on 32X, because if there was a Sonic 4, that's were it would have been.

I don't know, 32x kinda bombed, didn't it? I'd say it'd be on the Saturn Next..

Oh wait, we saw what happened there.

So were up to Dreamcast quality now. It could do some good 2d so I could see Sonic 4 on the Dreamcast if they had not decided to take it 3D with adventure.

Well I guess a big factor in the decision would be who is going to program this? I don't think we have anyone yet...

I think a lot of people are missing something I see all over the place. That is, the idea of playing games they make on the systems they like. The genesis I think is an extreme example of this, as you are practically limiting yourself, especially in the case of what I can see many are saying they want be what could have been a Sonic 4 on 32x. Playing on the genesis, dreamcast, whatever you can name, it's all just a simple novelty. Think about it this way: How many people are going to be playing this on a genesis to begin with if it were finished as a genesis rom? Probably the few that have a flash cart. And not everybody has a genesis these days, so they go for emulation. And what is emulation, but just simply playing the games on your computer?

There isn't any reason it can't just be a pc project, it would be much more open and free to expand as more than just a 64 color game. And I'm sure we all would like to see something more colorful than what the genesis can handle. While not everyone can notice it just by playing a game, I'm sure any art someone here makes that is beyond the palette of a genesis game isn't going to be so pretty when you have to shove it into a palette that is limited. I really hate having to be so conservative and restricted with SonEd2 myself, I'm only sticking with it now until ProSonic comes out. After that, I really have no intention of touching SonEd2 again, because either way I personally am only going to be playing anything I make right here on my pc anyway.

I see psp and dc, among other systems that do have a more involved scene with efficient developers kits out there. But while the whole limitations aren't there, the fact it's still closed off to those with those systems really bugs me. I just really want anyone who is going to be involved in this project to seriously reflect on how important it is to be on a genesis. because there really is none. As I mentioned just a bit ago in my post above, when Sonic XG was starting to show itself again, enough people were suddenly saying they'd love to see it as a genesis game. Just like Euan, I seriously don't see the mindset in that as that is going out of your way to restrict yourself, when there is no need to do so.

Just think about it =P ........

Well, can't we use prosonic with edits? It is really close to the Genesis games. We would add things like shields, instashield, and peelout.(maybe)

Well, one thing that I'm not sure has been mentioned aside from Phoeb was choosing leaders and thus developing "teams" for the project. So.. If I recall we've got Phoebius and Armada.. Then after that its just people throwing ideas into the hat. I believe once we get more organised, we'll be able to move on from there and make the major decisions needed to go forwards.

    HOLY SHIT! You guys got one hell of a project going here. I wish I'd seen it sooner ;_;

I feel so bad for not contributing anything.
Okay... as long as everything I need is on that first page, can I suggest something? You know how in Super Mario world where they have those item boxes that change from a star to a feather to a flower to a mushroom... and so on. What if there was a monitor that did that?

Also ... uh... programming. Rob's working on a new engine but before that he had a 2D Sonic one going. I wonder if I can get him to donate that, it worked pretty well last I remembered. I'll talk to him about it if anyone is interested. Or Pro Sonic would be good too.

I'd really like to be a part of this. If I came up with a level idea or an enemy... do I just post it?
I also volunteer to do any kind of level layout with SonEd or ProSonic or whatever

Well, I think the thing to do right now would be to see who all wants to stick with the project and see what they want to do so we can start kinda forming teams. I for one would like to stick with Conceptualising

I would love to do level layout. Now I know a lot of you know I did stuff for Epoch and it wasn't very good but that was my first time and I've totally learned from that. So if there's someone to layout levels after the graphics and stuff are done, I'll do that.
