    This.

If you're going to texture them, can you at least make it a bit more subtle? Weathering is cool but these spikes are just overkill

I definitely approve the use of alternate version of items, however these texturing examples seems not fit to the grassy environment of EHZ and HTZ.

Don't GIANT METAL SPIKES in general not fit the grassy environment of EHZ and HTZ?

    Just sayin'.

You could make it more cartoonish, but I dunno how that would turn out.

Unless the textures are going to be appropriate to the shape of the object, they shouldn't be used. If someone wants to post up something that gives the spikes relative depth with them applied, and a comparison to Blue Streak's and Gambit's most recent takes, that will be a solid base for us to critique.

    That looks beautiful.

An obvious difference that makes the spikes stand out from everything else.

Personally it makes the game feel even more like a game made for Flash with that look. Feels out of context with the rest of the art, almost like it's lower quality.

...what? I didn't make em rusty or anything, I made em metal... exactly what they were in Sonic 2!

Hey, what can I say? It's like choosing between bad or worse. Only trying to improve and improvise on the current, frighteningly ugly spikes.

    Downright bad.

Thanks... unless it was sarcasm, to which I would feel rather daft.

I prefer non textured, I mean there is very little items in game, or level design that is textured so I see no point in having just one of the objects textured.

    Here's a comparison:

(sorry to drag on about this, but I see this as a pretty important sprite in the game.)

    I like the old more.

  13. The old one is much better. The textured one looks fuzzy.

Old one is the better one. Nice try though.

    Perhaps a different texture?

Edit: Also, here's a slightly different one. It's a bit more grungy as well.

Nah, I mean that one is better, but it doesn't curve on the spikes, so they look flat, and its just not needed I think, I mean it is made so subtle to fit in with the rest of the sprites that is it worth it in the end.

I honestly prefer the textured ones to the plain ones. Dunno why...

This looks loads better now IMO. It still needs some tweaking with the weathered lines on the two background spikes. They mirror each other a little too much but other than that I think the spikes look great.

For some reason, It now looks like they were made from some kind of polished stone.

Looks like there were stylized with a pencil filter. Doesn't fit the game in my opinion. Just ask yourself what the original pixel spikes would look like if they intended it to have a texture in the first place. Remember that pixel art artists are good at this (if they want dirt, they add it). The choice of making the pixel spikes shiny and pointy should be kept for the HD version. Unless Sonic 2 HD has a completely new story, that Sonic in preset time had to go back to the old Sonic 2 set and replay it as a charity event, and the whole set had desintigrated over this 20 year of time. Then everything should be made dirty and old.
