So if you're running along and see big stalagmites or some arrows pointing straight up on the floor you're not going to think those might hurt you if you jump on top of them? Also, this isn't IWBTG. We're not going to make the spikes fly up off the ground and hit you the second you try jump over them or blow up into a bunch of hard to dodge shit like those fucking starfish enemies. Though that would be highly amusing.

  2. Of course they will be recognized as obstacles, but not necessarily as the so familiar spikes that will not do anything as long as you don't touch them.

How can I know for sure, since they look like different/new objects? Of course people will eventually realize that they are replacing the plain spikes, but it can be misleading at first, and exaggerated in the cases where their overall shape is changed.

But that's just my opinion. If anyone is willing to draw something like this, I'd like to see it. I might even change my mind...

  3. You can not just start changing the spikes into new objects. I agree that they could be given dust, or rust, or possibly vines. They might give the spikes more context within the "atmosphere" of the level. However, changing the spikes themselves into something totally new challenges the integrity of the entire project and its aims.

I agree, with subsubstantive; something much more subtle would be appreciated as far as differentiating the spikes between levels goes. For example, imagine this sort of thing (using the standard metal spikes as a base for each version):

    EHZ - normal
CPZ - subtly rusted / corroded
    ARZ - mossy near base
CNZ - extra shiny / reflective
HTZ - mossy near base (as ARZ)
MCZ - entangled in small vines near base (or mossy as ARZ/HTZ)
OOZ - subtly oil-stained (or rusty as CPZ)
    MTZ - normal (as EHZ)

..Something like that; to just subtly integrate the spikes a little more with the environment, while still keeping it obvious that they're the same object throughout and thus will be harmful to the player. This would also add extra detail while keeping truer to the visual style of the original.

    Any thoughts? = )

  5. I like the idea of the spikes being affected by where they are. We could do that with other objects as well, such as the sign posts.

Do you really think that people are that retarded? Pointy object = bad. In all sonic games. Water = bad, in all sonic games. I think that the player will think "Oh snap! This is awesome, I wonder what else they changed?". They are still spikes, besides if players jump on them then they will learn not to the hard way.

This can be a nice touch, but if we start to do that for the spikes, a lot of other objects have to be changed as well: starposts, signposts, springs, and why not monitors... All these common objects that we can find in several levels.

Don't you think that this is a bit too much work at the first place to make 5-7 iterations for all of them? For me, white spikes everywhere are just fine to begin with.

I think I preffer this idea... Blue spikes and arrows just sounds odd to me, though the neon spikes do sound kind of cool. We already have the neon lamppost, so why not? :) This could work well for all objects and give the game a more updated HD feel.

Wasn't there a Casino Night starpost with neon ights? I really like the idea that objects look different in different Zones.

These I don't agree on. It doest matter though, the question at hand was about the spikes. Speaking of the spikes, and water now actually, don't you think it would be more fitting if the spikes matched the levels? Like CPZ, we got purple water there instead of blue, to heighten the mood, adding extra details to certain objects on certain levels would add to the mood factor. I am also for weather effects.

I would like to think that S2HD should improve upon the Sonic 2 universe, like adding these details. Chances are that the spikes might be rusty in MPZ and CPZ and maybe be a bit overgrown in HTZ and such. And being faithful to the original game seems pretty pointless to me actually, why put down so much effort into doing something that is already done. Make a good and beautiful game, don't be afraid of adding details.

It amazes me how many people are crazy for the idea of having rust on metal. Have you ever heard of stainless steel. the spikes could be made out of aluminium or titanium and they don't rust LOL.

I think some metal work like spikes and platforms should have an aged look with dints and weather marks but nothing overboard.

Also the idea with the star posts, "Genius". Hope there in the game.

I personally feel that if they started changing stuff (like adding rust to the spikes) in Sonic 2 HD then it wouldn't deserve it's title.
I.e it's not sonic 2 remixed or some crap like that; it's Sonic 2 HD which to me sounds like a HD version of the same game that we all know and love.

Plus, if memory serves me right, I don't remember rust being on any spikes in any sonic game, EVER (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd think that if the spikes can/would rust then we woulda seen that in Sonic Adventure (or any shitty 3d sonic game after that).

Also, I cannot think of one instance where water is bad... It's not some sort of health booster or some shit, so it's not "good" either I guess. Yeah, sonic can drown after time goes by without receiving air of course, but in reality you and I would too- that doesn't make water bad does it?

Damn, you beat me to it, but I should at least point out that I never said water was a good thing, either. It's just another level feature that sometimes is best avoided because of the increased risk of dying. It only became a bad thing in the 3D games when they started making any large body of water an instant deathpit. But that's mainly irrelevant now

  19. That's actually not true. Aluminium rusts as well. (This is going to get scientific.) Rust is an oxidised version of a pure metal. For example, rusted iron is iron oxide, which has a very brown colour. Aluminium and titanium become aluminium oxide and titanium oxide. Unlike rusted iron, rusted aluminium doesn't like that different to pure aluminium. It's just a bit darker and very spotty.

Your right. I guess I was miss informed at school. I was told that any metal that rusted had iron in them and there for anything with "ium" at the end didn't have iron in it and was rust resistant.

That feckin science teacher needs to be sacked.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.
