OMG PAUSE! xD... When you press the pause button, the screens blur and the little pause menu apears, the hud is not blured so you can see it. (Concept, don't worry about the fonts xD)

I like the idea of the blurring effect, not sure about that menu though, looks a little too Sonic 06 to me.

I like Blast Processing's pause the best so far. It looks better nice and simple, with no blur or transparency or other unnecessary effects. I don't get why we need a restart feature, and there definately doesn't need to be a save feature in this. "Quit" should send you back to the title screen, where you can scroll down to "Exit Game". Either that, or "Restart" should restart the whole game and "Quit" should terminate the program.

I think a decent pause screen would just momentarily desaturate the game and add text simply saying "PAUSE" to the screen without any additional crap (think ZSNES without effects turned on). Like Tweaker said, there's menus for everything else. Juse use ESC to show the menu like most emulators do.

(Pausing should also occur automatically when focus is lost)

Although I don't see why a savegame woudl cause problems, especially if it was done S3&K style where you could go back to various zones later and replay them to recollect emeralds you missed. shrug

  8. S&K Collection's menu bars...that's a good idea. Shame I didn't remember that myself.

scratch what I posted earlier, this is what I meant
    [IMG]
It doesn't really fit the style of the game anyway.

I agree with most of the posts here, a pause menu is not needed, for pause I would just dim the screen and have "pause" overlayed on top. I am in favor of the esc key to reach the menu

Well here's my 2¢ on the matter.

Yes, a pause menu of some description may be useful.
Yes, there wasn't one in Sonic 2.
And yes, needless baaawing is so unnecessary.

Why don't you do something similar to Sonic 3D? When you press the pause button (Enter, or whatever), have the word "Pause" somewhere and make it flip or something.

    This illustrates my point:

Yes, I think a pause menu is due, most PC games have it.
Don't think about it as an alteration to the gameplay on the Sonic 2 part, but as an addition to the actual executable.

Sonic & Knuckles Collection had all those menus, for the Sound Test, Blue Spheres, Reset, and so on, yet, it was still good old Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with a little more than a GUI on top of it.

Reasons for having a pause screen with a menu:

An easy restart of the game
A way to easily quit the game
A way to go to the options menu to change things like controls, resolution, audio stuff
Overall can give a more modern feel to the game

Reasons for not having a pause screen with a menu:
It wasn't in the original game

For some reason I'm not seeing the problem here. We're making a computer game here. People who play computer games generally like to be able to change options, quit the game, and go to the main menu from within the game. With something that more than likely is going to be played with a usb gamepad (most of which have pause buttons) why shouldn't we impliment a pause menu? What exactly does it detract from the game?

^Now about that part. I think it would be best to make that into a bottomless pit. One level change yes, but an insignificant one.
... why did that never cross my mind. Good point

Menu bars and full screen do not usually mix, though.

And I dislike putting down a controller to pick up a mouse or touch a keyboard to navigate a menu.

    OK, here goes an alternative:
    • Enter: pause/unpause game
    • Esc: quit to title screen
Problem solved, no menus but still options are there. And it's intuitive. I've choosen Enter for pausing because that key is sorta analogous to the Start button in a joystick (you normally choose the options using that key).

How about this, menu bar for when the game is windowed, pause menu for when the game is in fullscreen.

Has been said and completely ignored, probably for making the game interface inconsistent.

The Ctrl+R option could have been suggested beforehand. This is also another great idea.

I think me and Aquaslash are on the same wavelength here; we're better off saving the pause menu do-hickey for a more enhanced version that includes HPZ and the like. So, rather than dismiss the ideas altogether, why don't we consider them for a "Special Edition" of sorts?

If we can't go one way or the other concerning the project, why not come to a compromise, like one that's already been suggested?

It was. The exception is that my proposal went to the title screen while you were playing, while the original suggestion was like pressing Reset on the Mega Drive. I would suggest Esc to go to the title screen (only when in-game), and Ctrl+R to reset the game entirely.

    And spacebar for jumping =]

Like I said before, take a lesson from every emulator ever and just have a dimmed pause screen with "PAUSE" overlaid SMB3 style, have buttons for pause/restart (CONFIGURABLE HOTKEYS DO NOT HARDCODE THESE OR I WILL KILL YOU), and use a standard Windows menu.

And there's nothing wrong with popping up a menu bar at the top of the screen in fullscreen mode (emulators do that too when the game is paused or ESC is hit). Changing the menu sytle between fullscreen and normal is just asking for confusion.

Hell, just do what ZSNES does and show the game's interface while paused (menu, mouse, etc).

I'm honestly suprised how much crap is being spewed over this when any recent emulator does an amazingly good job at showing you how it should be done.
