  3. I think the lighting is part of the problem. Compare the one I made for DoR with the fixed lighting and the others (even though the frame-rate is different):

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

The fixed lighting version looks thicker to me even though I didn't change the shape at all. Also, 16x16 is small enough that the resolution makes the ring look fatter than it really is; there's barely enough resolution there to give it shape and substance, so I expect SonicTeam would err on the side of thicker rather than thinner. You don't want a ring connected by the corners of pixels after all.

Looks to me like it needs to be thicker. And it needs caustics. IIRC, you're using Blender, I recommended you download yafray, it's much better than the built in renderer, and it also makes applying caustics easier. I'll probably give it a try when I get home on Thursday or something.

When comparing the rings from Blue Streak's last reply, the middle ring doesn't seem to have as many sprites to it - or is that my imagination? - so I suppose in one sense it can be difficult to do a comparison on the lighting when one has more sprites to it than the other.

You're all doing a great job with the rings, btw!

(On a light-hearted note, whenever I see the original ring on here now, it always seems to remind me of a mouth

I think that the turtle needs to be redrawn from scratch, I don't like it at all, sorry. The original had a shorter neck, had a tail, the flippers weren't so huge, and if we're remaking things we should follow the original colors, as well. Also I'm sure that eye pupils weren't meant to look like square blocks.

On a more serious note, here's an attempt a pause menu. With this being modern-day, I can't imagine that we'd use a freeze frame for pause. So I've made two attempts. They are basically the title card adapted.

    Just pause

I'm a newbie. Constructive comments, please.

  9. Personally I think that concept looks horrible.

I agree some sort of basic menu is needed for those options, but why a full-screen one and not a small text-based menu that goes over the screen, something like what's used in many other Sonic games?

Fair enough. It was just an idea from a newbie.

    Stop saying Newbie! XP

Having text saying Pause when Pausing isn't a bad Idea, but maybe a Little menu would be better, which would look a bit like this:

    —PAUSE--

    >Resume
    Exit

    Sorry about that!

I prefer the menu idea, myself.

You only need to do it how Sonic Jam does. A small menu overlayed on the top of a freeze-framed game.

That sounds better, but I've never played Sonic Jam.

But have you played the other 3D Sonic games? I assume you have, and they have the same pause menu interface.

As for the actual title card and font, they look very crisp and clear. Excellent work on that front. ;)

The title card was from earlier (much earlier) in this thread. The font is "Gaslight".

The font has already been sorted out by SwissCM ages ago. Gaslight and other similar fonts are incorrect due to some of the characters, I.E. 'A' and 'M', are not 100%.

Now that I'm thinking of Starpost, (it needs to be updated with the last corrections on the star) what about the sparkles turning around it?

That could be quite useful and easy to do! ;)

Now that you mention it... It would be interesting if somebody with the knowledge (Blue Streak? Master Emerald?) could make a textured sphere to see how the star would look like in a real balloon, with the correct proportions.
