Ok!... I made some "Title screen images" ...at 1600 x 1120 (It was the res of the original)

The first and second... are a Sunset / Dusk / Morning style, with a beautiful view (I'm using that as my wall now xD)

    [IMG][IMG]

The first is the "Real version" with added contrast... and the second is the "Game version".

...Ok, The third and fourth are some shots with sun in the sky, and with a more realistic Sky...one with contrast, the other without it.

    [IMG][IMG]

And finally, the Fifth, and the Sixth are a version like the one I posted a while ago, with minor changes, one with contrast the other without it.

    [IMG][IMG]

...Comments? I like all versions n.nU... So I had to post them all...

sm&k's font work makes me wonder -- will we still use the italic font used in the original Sonic 2? The only reason it was italicized was so that certain numbers could be more easily distinguishable while in the interlaced (2-P) mode, and I don't think it looks as good (none of the other games used italics).

Am I right in thinking that island is South West Island and the whole game takes places there bar everything after Metropolis obivously .Perhaps a few small details on the levels (I.e. Mystic Cave Zone, Metropolis Aquatic Ruin) on the island would add more to the feel. On the other hand it could be distracting from the source too much.

    Thanks!

Well... Dunno, cause, I mean, It will be distracting and It will be not so... HD, I like the concept, but we should mantain the style.

Well...In the title screen...maybe. Dunno about if the engine can do it...but It will be really good in the Title screen ONLY (not in the stages)... and....It will be to much to ask to syncro with the Clock in the pc? ... Like: Hey!, The title screen is at night... Of course 'cause in your country is nightime...

    We can dream =P...

I mean, Its a nice touch, and doesn't change gameplay... Its only a detail n.nU

Thanks for the reference image, I already had a few downloaded but those are going to help me quite a bit in adding detail work.

So, how is drawing small details (As opposed to manually HQ4X'ing the entire bloody lot) to add definition somehow "not HD"...? Or, not "high definition"...?

    Honestly.

It's kind of odd how the gradients just... end at the rock/beach side. For that matter, the entire rock side looks like if someone spilled some dip sauce or something.

Yet, I also adore the gradient styles at certain places:

I'd say it's best to make it look more 'busy' without adding too much details. A grain effect, maybe?
Also, I do hope the sky photo isn't going to be the final. It's a rather bad quality photo at that.

I really think Emerald Hill should have it for the sake of showing of the first level in the game. You know, that OH-SHIT-FIRST-LEVEL-THIS-IS-GONNA-BE-GREAT feeling. Also, levels played at Dusk in any game has had a really good atmosphere. Remember the luxury train chapter in Paper Mario : The Thousand Year Door? When it were Dusk time, the game just overloaded with atmosphere.

And random/different backgrounds shouldn't be hard to do. Not that I know much about programing, but still.

Mmm...I don't know, maybe as an extra...but I think that you can be right...If we think that sonic 2 happens in a Day/night/Day/night/day ... it will be something like:

    Emerald Hill: Morning (like 11pm)
Chemical Plant: Day (But the sky its so poluted that you see it like the game)
    Aquatic Ruin: Dusk
    Casino Night: Night (obvious)
Hill Top: Dawn (this will be really cool at dawn)
Mystic Cave: (You don't see the sky here, but It can be day or morning)
    Oil Ocean: afternoon
    Metropolis: Night
Sky Chase : Dawn (This will be awesome that way...)
    Wing Fortress: Morning
    Death Egg: Day

And the end is at Day like in the game...

Its only an Idea, but it'll be cool to see how the day change when you play...like an continuos story

I think we're starting to exagerate here. Next suggestion will be to put a webcam towards the sky and use it for real-time realistic backgrounds <____________________________<

    Wow, those wallpapers look great.

If only the island looked a bit more polished... Seriously, the brown parts look like an automatic filter was applied to the original pixels.

    No no, nothing like that.

I think only Emerald Hill should have the day-dusk-night cycle, just for showing of the first level. The other levels shall remain untouched.

I was being sarcastic =P... I know its exagerated xD
... And we need a lens flare efects, and we need a brown "realistic" filter...cause reality is brown. xD

Thanks!, you're right about the island too...

... I know, I was joking... I know what you were saying...but dunno, it'll strange...maybe as an extra...

Generally I like the idea of a day cycle however I think that if somebody were to play the HD version for the first time and find a night/dark background may not realise the connection between the time of the day on their PC clock and could be repelled from the game thinking "Hmmm... the original wasn't like this".

I was very impressed by the wallpapers.

Most of us wouldn't think about details like "LOL THAT PIXEL DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THE ORIGINAL" while actually playing Sonic 2 HD (when it gets finished) but I think that a Sunrise/Day/Dusk cycle for Emerald Hill wouldn't rise too many eyebrows.

I seem to be in the minority that actually want creative enhancements that wouldn't spoil the feel of the game. Did Ryu's background suffer in the transition from sunset > night > daylight in the tenure of Street Fighter II? No.

As it is, if I played S2HD where it's headed, I would probably be overwhelmed by a sense of "Is that it?".

Hmm... the rocky part of the island doesn't look right... Allow my quotes from IRC to demonstrate what I'm talking about.

Feel free to disregard my crudeness, but that's honestly the way I feel.

Oh, and this also applies to a few of the artists.
