Guess Metal Sonic isn't a Metal Sonic since he can't roll or spin jump in the classic games :V

Edit: I think I just figured out who the real Metal Sonic is in Sonic CD :eng99:

  5. Mhh, yeah, I count that

Every good Sonic game should have some enemy that fundamentally counters Sonic so you have to outsmart it instead of tackle it head on imo.

I actually distinctly remember being like 5 and thinking this exact same thing.

I thought Rollers being the first metal Sonics was an undisputed point!

Real talk tho, Rollers can roll because they're based on armadillos. In Japan they're even called "Arma". And yes, they roll fast, as they're found in a level full of slopes. They're not based on Sonic or hedgehogs.

Inb4 Rollers are Metal Mighty :V

Wrong, Rollers Mk II are Metal Mighty

How can you call yourself a Sonic fan and not know the difference between the two models?

(Also, they got updated in Mania Plus for whatever reason)

Looks like the shading and highlights were updated to be more Chaotix-like in alignment with the rest of the game. I don't mind being wrong though.

I also thought Rollers were mock-Sonics as far back as when I first played the game.

I thought those color updates were done with Encore Mode in mind.

Or the spear comes out of a slit-shaped hole instead of a circular one, so the copper-looking base bit is actually just two semicircles, which isn't possible to tell from the side-view.

What puzzles me more is that the thickest part of the spear head just dematerialises when the spear is retracted:

Maybe it's not pulled back as far as it could be? I thought part of what you're pointing at is just highlights on the hole...

Since they shared Sonic's palette in S1 it makes sense to use Mighty's, clone of a clone haha.

I'm sure they knew what they were doing with the red version like that.

In the release version of Mania the Roller Mk2 used colors from the stage's palette. This obviously would cause it to change color in Encore Mode, so in the update it was changed to use colors from the global palette instead.

The same is true of the boss in PGZ1, changing from orange in the original release to yellow following updates.

What other objects changed colour in the update?

The Death Egg Robot's palette in the cutscene after GHZ2 got messed up, with its underside becoming orange.

I honestly wish they had just added more palettes in Mania Plus rather than swapping/altering the palettes and making things look worse, even if it made the game less accurate to the Saturn's limitations. Mania already does things the Saturn couldn't do anyway, like true widescreen.

  18. Is that even part of the Saturn’s limitations? I’m far less familiar with the Saturn’s tech but it seems more like they were just replicating how the Mega Drive and other 16-bit hardware worked within the Retro Engine.

I dunno. I recall people here saying that Mania was designed to look like a Saturn game and comply with its limitations.

  20. Oh yeah, but that has more to do with the overall color palette, animation, and low-poly 3D graphics. This is just some quirk of how the devs implemented things in the Retro Engine more than them trying to be faithful to the Saturn specs. From what I can tell, the Saturn can pretty much have as many palettes as you want.
