I feel like I probably would love this game if it weren't for the weird control flaws. It's a shame more care wasn't put into the final product, especially with the horrible state the controls were in when it first released on XBLA/PSN with only eight directional controls.
Sorry for the bump but I have some questions. How does this version compare to the Saturn release? Have the controls been fixed on PC? Would it potentially be better to emulate the original game?
Its HD, its the PS2 port, the control issue is fixed although its not 1-1 from what I've heard, its got a small amount of audio issues, like some slight desync, but it looks nice, and it has Christmas NiGHTS (granted its incomplete) Personally, Id recommend HD, specifically for the sake of supporting a near-flatlining IP, but the authentic one emulated is just as good, if not better, in my opinion.
Many years later, ColonD/JJPTails has made some mods. I haven't tried these out myself, but here's a video: 60fps: https://gamebanana.com/mods/452518 Input: https://gamebanana.com/mods/452520 Custom date and time: https://gamebanana.com/mods/452506 Skip intro: https://gamebanana.com/mods/452452
These days? I mean just look at the original shape SADX PC was in; NiGHTS was in comparably good shape compared to that, if these few updates alone massively improve it (though I'd like to see a few more QoL improvements like the timing on the Wizeman intro or the missing Christmas NiGHTS bonuses, but that would all take a lot more work then a few edits).
^ Previously, my last post in this thread was from March 1st, 2014 where I complain about the control issues. I am genuinely shocked that over a decade later, this game finally got fixed with mods.
Waiting for this dude to get to the lack of correct lighting in Gillwing's arena. Fingers crossed etc. EDIT: And five days later... https://gamebanana.com/mods/455706 Colon D is doing the Lord's work.
Are the analogue controls the same as the Saturn version now, or just heavily improved? Either way, it amazes me how so many iffy ports can be fixed by just one or two fans with the know-how and the time to spare figuring it out. I think the only major things left are the model tinting and the messed up timing of the in-game cutscenes (the music not fading before each boss, the moment they explode at the end being too early, the Wizeman fight, etc.)
Also the character FMVs, right? Like, the intro for each character is supposed to play when you select them? Because it doesn't, at least not for me. I was really confused my first time until I checked the museum screen and found a bunch of
Colon D has now released a mod that applies Nearest-Neighbor sampling in the Sega Saturn Dreams Mode. Exciting to see this much momentum and the improvements it's generating after so long!
