That's what I've been thinking. While I cannot see a direct connection between Dust Hill and Madness Mountain, I'd totally buy the idea that concepts from both were reused in Mystic Cave.

I swear I remember reading Naka (or someone) changing the theme of the level after hearing a composition sent in. Wasn't the music composed based off of concept art? It went from a castle, to a haunted/spooky vibe castle, to then a mystic/spooky cave? I could also be pulling crap out of thin air as my memory seems to be junk but I'm hoping this triggers memories for someone else to expand upon.

Now that I think about it, how can we be sure it was an actual haunted house/castle? Naka said that it had the feel of a haunted house, not that it was one.

    (quote taken from TCRF)

For all we know, it could’ve been something like Gimmick Mountain Zone from the 8-bit version, with it actually built into one of the island's mountains instead of being its own structure elsewhere on the island. That leads me, personally, to believe that it may have actually been unrelated to Dust Hill to some degree.

Besides, the team said they’d have created new levels through palette-swapping assets from other levels. Why would they go through the effort of drawing new assets for Dust Hill and turn it into something else? What was stopping them from going the route of Green/Emerald Hill and Hill Top and just making it another palette-swap?

So, the VGHF's digital archive is now open to the public, including that brand new collection of Craig Stitt's materials that they talked about a while back.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's still labeled as "unprocessed", so they've uploaded nothing yet. However, all of Tom Payne's stuff from a year ago is still here, and it seems like some of it has been given text descriptions that help give context. Who knows, maybe we can learn something new from those alone.

It'll be interesting to see what they have. Though I suggest we start a new thread for those materials when they surface, because I feel like this one has been beaten half to death, and it's focus was really supposed to be about Genocide City.

Why was the other thread ever closed, anyway?

I think it would've made far more sense to close the GCZ-centric thread and keep the general Sonic 2 development thread, especially since most of the stuff we got in December '23 was related to other levels.

Yeah, the well on this batch of materials is rather dried up. Once Stitt's materials are made available, it'd be a lot nicer to start from page 1 of a thread instead of 105 or higher.

IIRC, there was a lot of overlap, so it made more sense to condense discussion into one thread at that time.

That, and I think it kept devolving into petty arguments.

No, it really didn't... and if anything this thread should've been closed.

But oh well. I thought there was the possibility of one more chat with Brenda as well, or have I lost my mind now?

There was, but it was just stated as a possibility. Maybe it didn't work out?
