Well, sorry if this is in the wrong place. If so, move it to its correct location.

I have some guesses to how and where some unused sprites were used that other sites don't say.

    1. The bounce and crush Sonic ball.
According to the concept art, the ball looks like as if it would have bumpers on it. Which shows it would most likley be used in the pinball zone, Casino Night. And another reason it would be in Casino Night, is how the ground looks in the concept art. Bouncing around an area to slow down Sonic. If Sonic were to jump into it, it would bounce him back. like a bumper, so it would bounce around ans a mobile bumper. If Sonic were to let it crush him. You know what. But this therory can be tottaly bummed out due to the sprite found in the rom. But that might be because the sprite was incomplete. Any questions?

    2. The 3 missing Sonic animations.
The laying down pose: It might have been used after you land on Tails plane in the ending, seeing that Sonic might have been tired after a long battle against The Death Egg. (Yes, that's the name of the final boss machine, I think)
The looking at screen pose: Sonic might have looked at the screen before giving the victory pose for the game being finished like in Sonic and Knuckles.
Pulling sprites: Sonic might have possibly pulled a swich to open a door, like in Sonic Heroes. Questions?

    3. The futuristic lampost.
Well, at one point Sonic 2 was to have time travel in it, right? Maybe at one point, depending on which level you were in, like in Metropolis, the lampost sprite would be that one, cause its futuristic. So theres a possibility that the ones in the normal game would be the present. But there could have been a past one too, for like Wood zone, I think it could have been a possibility. Questions?

    4. Ball item in Oil Ocean.
Theres a chance that the ball was once meant to break walls open to go further into the level. So basically you would press the swich and the ball would go to the wall and break it open. Similar to the blocks to break the wall open in Ice Cap Zone in Sonic 3. Questions?

I might have more later. I think I have supporting facts for all of them.

Interesting theories. It's a shame we might not ever find out what the true purpose of those sprites were for.

Hmm.. nice second post. You've backed up your theories well. Good work, sparks, however, I would like to point out some things.

    Regarding the lamp post:

When designing a game, Sonic 1, for example, they had to choose a lot of different things-they were re-writing games as we knew it. They went through a lot of things, an armadillo, a bunny, a whole bunch of things. The point: that every video game changes. They probably built the two, beta tested them, and made a decision based on what the people thought. People liked the other one better, hey, I like the other one better, and they just switched it.

You should be a member  Your theories are good. Always thought that it would be neat to see how Sonic 2 would have had time travel. They should try to incorporate that theme again in another Sonic game.

Actually, I've noticed that when I play Hidden Palace in Debug Mode in Sonic 2 Final, if you let sonic wait long enough, he'll go into the laying down pose.

My God, you should be a member! Yeah, S3 was based on a lot of lost levels and ideas, such as Ice Cap Zone, that as kinda like a combonation of HPZ and HTZ, the inside cavern was kinda like HPZ the outside was kinda like HTZ, and other stuff to such as Sandopoilis was a desert level, and so on.

Yeah, kinda like the Sonic 1 Prototype Concept Art that was found, and it had concepts that looked like they were recycled into Casino Night, Lava Powerhouse and Marble Garden. Or at least, that's my take on it.

I have a different opinion of the Sonic facing forward sprite. I figured that it might be used for when you change direction, like in the Metroid games for GBA; the sprite would be displayed between the facing right and facing left sprites to give an increased sense that Sonic was actually turning. The sprite could have been taken out for any number of reasons.

Eh... Yeah, those could be anything, literally. Unless somebody finds any proof for the purpose of those things we could go on forever making up stuff about them.

    That makes the most sense.

Oh well. Go on making stuff up forever we shall. What are we here for, right?

    :P

It's true. But if there's nothing else to do, make up random stuff.
