I don't know about anyone else but I preferred the start that you had before on the SCZ. It sounded more fitting. I do like the use of the piano that you have thrown in there.

Sounds interesting, but I'm not sure it should be applied to the sound effects as well.

It sounded stupid when I didn't.

The music isn't compromised, and the underwater effect sounds an extremely cool addition! :)

Bravo to steveswede for this neat concept! We'll definitely look forward to implement it.

If I can make a suggestion for the Sky Chase Zone music, I think it should just be a single, non-looping piece meant to last for the duration of the level (which never changes, given its auto-side-scrolling nature).

    Yeah, this.

I mean, it only makes sense to muffle the sound effects in addition to the music. Sonic IS underwater - so why wouldn't the sounds he makes be muffled, too?

If you want to take the "it makes sense" route, tell me why Sonic can hear sounds in space. Maybe not much in Sonic 2's DEZ, but how about Doomsday zone?

As long as there is an option to turn it off. I couldn't care for the water effect and would rather listen to how it was meant to be.

A bit like in Super Mario World where when Mario jumps onto Yoshi, it adds some drums to the tune?

  10. So hey, I'm a stupid jackass, butt am I to understand we will have 3 tracks simultaneously playing (though not audible), the zone track, speed shoes soundtrack, and an underwater soundtrack... Ladies and gentlemen I got my teeth on the curb and my ass in the air, RIP ME OPEN AND FILL ME IN ;)

    Touche.

But that's videogame mothafuckin' magic for you, and totally beside the point. It all comes down to personal preference. I'm not here to argue about what's logical in a *SONIC* game, get what I'm saying? They'll either apply the muffled effect to music and sound effects or not. My vote is "yes, muffle it all plz", and that is all. ;)

  12. Just add a 2 pole low pass filter to the sound engine. When Sonic is under water, enable the filter for all sound output. You could add a 4 pole bandpass for neat effects while in space. Doing so eliminates the need for separate sound tracks.

Just my two cents... I love the idea of the underwater filter, and it could also be cool if you could give all the sound effects an echo (but not muffled) when underwater as well. Maybe.

I think that would just add a lot of unnecessary dissonance to the sound. Also sound doesn't really echo audibly underwater.

That's not really the same thing.

  16. Since this project is already not open sourced or GPL, just use the FMOD audio library. It's free to use for non-profit projects. That library will provide all of the audio handling the game needs and has built in low pass filters (Occlusion, Obstruction) that can be used for underwater effects.

As for space stuff, use high pass filters (also in FMOD) so that the sound can still be heard but sounds very thin and distant.

hello peoples, I'm back, and with my newest try at Aquatic Ruins Zone:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/nwu2mf

I tried to make it sound like you're in a jungle-like area, with pan flutes, guitars, and even castanets. Only god knows how many tries it took me to get to this.

There's also my try at Casino Night Zone's 2P music:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/iccwdj

Since it takes place in what I think is a Las Vegas-like place, I took the obvious route of instruments you'd likely hear from a place like that: Saxes, brass, pianos(for the man that likes it classy), guitars and even jazz drums.

Hope ya think these are ok, and tell me what ya think and how I could improve them, ok? :3

  18. Casino Night 2P is excellent, especially if you listen to the original right after. Got a 404 when trying to download Aquatic Ruins.

box.net is a great site for uploading mp3s, because potential listeners can stream them right in the browser after you upload.

Thanks for the submissions ancara, here's my two cents.

CNZ 2P is sounding nice, but you should try to bring the brass to the front more. Right now most of the emphasis is placed on the bass end of the scale, and the instruments that are supposed to be the primary pieces are more in the background than they need to be. Hard to tell if it's just a volume issue or something that a compressor could take care of right now.

The flutes and pipes you have for ARZ are very well done as well. The piano makes for a good backup. There are a few places where you have the rapid claps going on that also need to be louder. Granted, things related to volume are in the ear of the beholder, but they feel a bit on the subtle side for my taste.

Keep it up, these are some of the better sounding contributions for these zones we've had in some time.

Did you take a fan-made MIDI to make it? I think I recognize the parts that differ from the original, from some very old MIDI.

Besides that, the instruments sound fine to me, but I'm no sound expert...
