Holy shit, the Green Hill Zone one sounds like "what if Mario Galaxy featured Sonic..."
My name is test-object and I approve of these songs. :colbert:

This is another problem with the current system. Submissions get lost, real feedback rarely happens since only a couple people look at anything at a time.

Maybe we need a music subform with per-author threads. The head post of each thread would be updated with all that author's WIPs, and feedback goes in the replies.

Really? I see a bunch of people with no particular commitment just making half-hearted attempts at contributing "whatever" as getting nowhere. I don't see what speed has to do with it either, focus is something different.

Does it have to be open source forum submission?

  3. Hey I am Crescent affliction, and I was wondering if submissions are still open for "Mystic Cave Zone". My project entitled Crescent Affliction is a classically inspired metal band with ska influences, and I was wondering if we could do a rendition in this style. Mystic Cave Zone just screams reverb soaked scorching leads, with trombones and trumpets to accompany it. All layered over a distorted counterpoint bass and drum section. With and added pipe organ to nail the eerie vibe that the song gives off. This is just my interpretation of the song, and even if it has no place here then I'm sure you guys wouldn't mind giving it a listen once It is arranged. Thanks for your time...

All stages are open for submissions, so if you feel like taking a stab at it, then feel free. I'd love to see what you guys have in mind for the song.

I have to ask, though, how are you planning on deciding which music goes into the game?

I would imagine that the staff will review every song submission and make a list of the best and then narrow the list down from there. Aside from that, I'm not sure. Canned Karma saves every song submission that he sees in this thread, so we should have a fairly long list of things to listen to when we do get around to nailing down songs for the final version.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have the same guy "remaster" all the tracks? It would be weird if the styles differed between stages.

I'm actually listening to some of the song submissions and the originals side-by-side right now. I don't really feel like that will be an issue.

On the contrary, the many styles make up a very refreshing and varied atmosphere. :)

Sonic 2 HD, various 3D work
My personal recommendations to the staff will be based off three points:

    Is the submission faithful?
-the piece is easily recognizable as representing a given zone or theme from the original game

Does the submission go above simply recreating the original?
-the piece makes use with modern instruments/samples to create a new work fitting the theme and atmosphere of each area.

    Does it inspire?
-not only does the piece show a faithful and reimagined take on the original, but leaves its listeners impressed that this is one of the big ways Sonic 2 HD is living up to its promise.

But this is a soundtrack, not an album. A different mindset is required for each.

I wont say that I know how much music has been created so far, but looking on youtube, there are alot of people who have taken sonic music, and recreated it in a 'HD' way... one guy in particular who uses FLStudio has redone the boss music for all three games so they sound like they have been done by an orchestra, they sound awesome in my opinion. If people on here see this as perfect or see some of the people who have done this as potentially valuable to the project, would it be worth trying to branch out and getting them to aid us?

heres some examples of the one particular guy I had in mind:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNSsLA_ye7Y - Sonic 1 Boss

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJumqm9_jz4...feature=related - Sonic 2 Boss

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkRjlAhBUwI...feature=related - Sonic 3 Boss

I mean they may have taken some artistic liberty with these pieces, but if we got this guy on board... I'm sure he could be great

Heres another two guys who may be useful

    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F00BAEEEB1FAD6E7

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTLq3F9UPPo

In all honesty, I'm not entirely sure on what the plans are for the music in the game, but if you want, I'd be happy to ask these guys if they'd be interesting in atleast helping

  13. Asher: The first guy's music was good, but I did not really like either of the other 2's music. I like the idea of having another section added to the music (as 1st guy did in Sonic 2 Boss Theme) but I don't know if this is what other people want in this community project. I would like to add chorus variations or improvisation sections to the tracks - sooo much freedom and possibilities.

Ah yes, I really do like that Sonic 2 boss theme (although I think Sonic 1 had the best boss theme), what I like about the 2nd theme's remix is the flutey 'zelda-like' feel to it... somehow it still fits in my opinion.

Let me get this into your thick heads.

    Robotnik != Military.

We don't want orchestral, we want military. This means bring out the trumpets, the trombones, etc, and most importantly, the fucking SNARES.

I'm sure he can do a military sound, he'd done a hell of alot of stuff using FLStudio.

Would you prefer it if it was mor like the intro of this one?

listen to the first 8 seconds, because after that, it goes into some sort of swing jazz version.

Personally, I like the orchestra, gives it a Darth Vader 'Imperial March' feel which suits Robotnik.

Is it worth me asking him?

Also, I know this is too far from the original to be used, but it shows how much skill he has

  17. We should ask him. It's unlikely for him to not say yes. After all, it seems like the Sonic soundtracks are an obsession to him (and you can't blame him).

I've already sent him a message.

  19. I gotta agree, Robotnik is more similar to a high tech military figure such as Darth Vadar... I mean he made a DEATH EGG (Death Star), for garsh shakes.
Therefore, I believe a more orchastral sound is needed, not that it can't also reflect a military theme. I think a hybrid is possible.

Just a thought, what about having Robotniks theme influenced by each zone? Could be cool...

You know, at first glace I thought that was stupid, but now that I think about, that could be pretty cool.

Like, EHZ's boss could be the normal theme, but then have each other level's boss theme's instrumentation change a bit. Perhaps even the tempo and arrangement could change *slightly*.

I think if it was done with much moderation, it could be pretty cool.
