I like it, but both the drums and the melody feel a bit empty... The main line (up until the harmony kicks in) DEFINITELY needs a reverb effect... it doesn't have that haunting air to it that it should.
Drums can always be polished at the back end... it's a solid effort :)

Thats why Canned Karma is in charge of the submissions. Making it semi open source will make it harder for new talent to bring work to the database which could potentially be the quality this project is looking for. Canned Karma has got the submissions that best suit the game at the moment and I'm glad he is in charge as IMO he has been fair with his selections. As for the sound engineer, Scubasteve is the main man for that and has done excellent remakes. It would be good to hear some of his opinions but I haven't seen him in this forum for a while. But to be fair, his opinion would probably fall on death ears with some people as they are not prepared to change what they feel doesn't need changing. The keeping track of things have been discussed before and no one got in contact with Scubasteve about doing collaborations with him. I have also mentioned about the sharing of single track sections with each other and was happy to share mine but no one mentioned anything about getting involved. I am still happy to load single track submissions but its only going to work if all of us do it. But could everyone who submits stuff handle the fact that their work could be altered. I know I could because I'm not stubborn like that. I want the best for these remakes.

IMO we don't talk to each other enough about each others work which can lead to a delay on perfecting work. You could enforce people to make comments on all submissions. But this is not a job it is meant to be a labour of love of this retro game. If there was a boss delegating I think alot of us just wouldn't bother submitting anything and the project would really get nowhere. I really don't see the rush to get all the music done speedily as rushed work would be complained about and that the work is not up to standard that was aimed for. As logical as it may be in what you say, it would just not work in a open source forum submission.

I wouldn't say that they are wasting their time as they do it for themselves as well. But the idea of discussing what the instruments really are would be a start.

  3. Yeh I enjoy making music, but I mean people making changes etc. Anyway, made this today.... not finished yet, still got to put in some techno effects like flangers etc. I had really bad aliasing when I made it into WMV for Youtube, so it's staying as .ogg -

I can imagine Sonic doing the robot to this. :)

    I knew what you meant.

Is that for Sonic 2 HD or just for own enjoyment?

By the way did you read what I said. If you really want to get things on the move then we got to start suggesting what instruments are being used in the BGM. Name a zone that hasn't got much attention that could do with another mix. I think Aquatic Ruin Zone.

  5. Just for fun really, do you think it could go in S2HD?

I think I could have a crack at Hill Top... can't remember hearing a good one for that.

An interesting set of instruments you could use for aquatic ruin could be the pan pipes/flute, but if you're going for the faithful version, then it's definitely latin music and you want spanish guitar and trumpet, and probably some orchestral strings. I can't put my finger on what the synthy one should be though...

Hill Top and Aquatic Ruin have definitely been neglected, and I think probably all the 2-player stages have been neglected as well. I actually found this version of Aquatic Ruin Zone last week and I kinda like it. I don't know if it's been posted here or not, so here it is.

  13. I'm not using one! lol. I'm using this homebrew program on the Sony PSP called PSP Rhythm. http://www.psprhythm.com/

I would like to get into using a DAW though, I guess FL Studio is what most of you guys are into am I right?

EDIT- Sorry Steveswede, I had to cancel the download as it's 29MB and took 10 mins to get 1MB of it. Can you upload an .ogg or .mp3?

It's worth getting one if you are serious about writing music. FL Studio is my main DAW and I think it's excellent. It does depends what feels best for you. The best thing about FL Studio is that it's lifetime free updates so your software is not going to run out of date. It makes it a long term investment. its only for PC just to let you know.

Yeah, I did miss that one. I think your lead instrument, the sax thingy, sounds a bit too tinny, but other than that, it's not bad. I also enjoy BlazeHedgehog's take on Hilltop Zone, but the sax or whatever in his is a bit overbearing.

That lead is a Harmonica. It was the best VSTi I could find. I did try a sax but it sounded shit.

    Blueblur87. I'll upload a ogg file.

The flute I agree as that is the obvious. I give a go at doing a flute sample. It will be done some point later as I need to do the midi for ARZ. Pin point some ideas or upload some audio clips of things that can represent instruments in ARZ.

  18. I don't know why but it's estimating that it will take 54 mins to download your .ogg file. I'll try tomorrow (in a few hours) but it's very slow!

I liked what I heard from your take on Hill Top steveswede, seemed like a better fit than the vast majority of the submissions we'd seen for the zone up to that point. That said, I'm still looking for something that awes like the tracks I and Gambit have posted more than a few times for people to reference.

That link Gambit posted for the remix of Aquatic Ruin was very impressive. I might prefer a different instrument than electric guitar for the melody, but what he did for the harmonies and background instruments was truly great. I know some of you don't want to feel biased by listening to others' pieces so your own won't mirror them, but look at it this way guys - there is a definitely feel we're after for the S2HD score. The last thing we want is for you guys to pour your time and talents into something that ultimately doesn't fit the bill.

Yeah I liked that Some of the instruments in that ARZ except the guitar for the main lead. It needs a bit more drama but that might come with the lead being something like a combination of a violin and a flute. I'm gonna give it a go with doing ARZ. But I'll also keep it open for others to add submissions if they want to put there input in.

Thanks Canned Karma, I appreciated your comments the last time I put it up. It still needs work like it needs to be properly mastered and I want to do more additions to it at some point. It is also open to anyone who wants to use any sections of it. Just let me know.
