Music Remastered

Hey, you guys. Love your music, hate your free file hosts. Would the project admins be cool with me setting up a small music host on my server and give out logins to music makers who request it? I have a huge amount of space and a practically unreachable amount of bandwidth that'll never get used, and I really hate these crappy free file hosts that have captchas and waiting times and ads out the ass.

How about the SFX from the Saturn version of Sonic 3D? Most of them were pretty good.

 

This could be done easily if someone here has got a Yamaha DX100 and converted the YM2612 presets to DX100 presets. There a plugin called Phantom from discoDSP that will load these presets and should give better sound quality with the ability to edit them within a DAW.

I don't know how to get the presets from the YM2612 into the DX100, or if its possible to load y12 presets into the DX100. All I know is what Wikipedia mentions that its is possible.

Hey guys! After a long period of time without posting (apologies for that to all the admins, including Tweaker), I decided to throw my hat into the ring once again.

Now then, I know that we are not focusing on this one, BUT, I decided to submit my take on the ending theme of Sonic 2. Of course, any critique is appreciated!

I am going to say it bluntly, I don't like the scratch effect. It is too loud and does not sound right. But having tried to do my own, I know how hard it is to find a sample or make one from another sample, so well done for the attempt. I have a feeling my keyboard or an old casio keyboard will have the right sound effect for the scratch sound, I think it's "frett strings" or something like that, and you have to play around with it and tap the key multiple times to get the sound in MZ. I don't have the keyboard with me now, but will in a few weeks. In the meantime, I might have another go at stealing samples from music tracks and splicing them. The clap sound is likely to be straight from a keyboard, or layered samples from a keyboard. I think when I get on the keyboard I'll be able to solve most of the problems including bass.

 

I believe ScubaSteve posted this WIP of Metropolis some time a while ago in this thread (I just found it by going through my history). Maybe it can be of some help ..? It isn't on this page, in any case.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates my scratch effect.

I've already listened to it, and my aim was to do a remake more faithful to the original than Ransom Rath's version, though it is good as a piece of music.

I tried today to make a new scratch effect, but I failed. I'm currently looking into bass sequence software, no luck yet...

 

Faithful remasterings are certainly the basis that we're after, but the little extras seen in Ransom Rath's Metropolis and the more recent take that was done on OOZ are what I'll be looking for in finalized versions. Granted, we'll be taking all completed submissions into account for the final version, but that's my two cents on it. The other staff members may have different tastes, so only time will tell.

I have to say, I was surprised by how difficult it is to search for a person scratching a record with moderate amount of skill without a background track. If I could have just found one such video, I could have sampled a half-second audio from it.

 

If you really need a scratch, you could always take the S2 one, and somewhat remaster it.

 

What's music has been confirmed for now?

 

Even if you don't include my Metropolis version in the game, I enjoy doing it so it's not a waste at all, and I'm still learning. Tweaked versions like those Canned Karma was referring to are very well suited to the new graphics, and overall feel of the game, these versions are very polished whereas mine is slightly rough because I am not experienced in recording and sequencing compared to those guys. With more polish and tweaking, I think it will sound very good and faithful to the original, and I am determined to add the bass, -maybe- redo the drums, and also find a new sample for the clap and scratch effects when I get hold of my keyboard in a couple of weeks. Apart from Ransom Rath's version, the others are very much all midi versions, which IMHO don't do the song justice, and sound hollow in comparison to actual instruments.

To DalekSam: I already used the scratch from S2 in my older versions, and I think Ransom Rath did the same. It's probably what I'll end up doing if I don't find it on my keyboard.

I did manage to find some samples for vinyl records being scratched by DJs on www.freesound.org... I put them together in one mp3 for you to edit, and also put the original sonic 2 scratch at the end for contrast, and second from end is my lame attempt :P Theres more on that website, but the search tool is poor, so it's hard to find good samples like these.

One thing I've surmised so far is that the original scratches were played at key D. I lowered the key of the samples you gave me by 6 and found that the scratches started sounding closer to what we need. Hopefully I'll have something soon. But in the meantime, I have work.

 

For anyone who is actually looking to create a scratch, you should note the symmetries in the waveform. The sound is actually the same waveform repeated 2.5 times with a slight modification before the ending part.
