  2. That's what I feared. Anyone know a free alternative? I only REALLY need it for a drum beat, but other suff would be useful.

I just found this site, which has a ridiculous number of free audio programs cataloged very nicely. It has a drum machine subcategory, too, if you're looking for something like that specifically.

  4. Well, not particularly a drum machine, but it can be done with just that. Thanks, I'll have a play around with these and maybe be back with something.

I know I'm pretty darn late in mentioning this, but has anyone ever considered doing the music in ADX format? I don't know of how many utilities there are for it on the web, but I figured if we could get it working the way we want it to it could at least recreate the sped-up music from the original game. It uses loop points to seamlessly loop music in many mainstream games and I'm guessing if you set enough small loop points and trigger the music to change over to the sped up version when hitting the speed shoes it would work perfectly.

Your ADX doesn't loop properly, it makes a horrible crackling noise - at least on foobar2000's plugin that plays back ADX files - and I know it follows the ADX spec correctly as not only does it loop official ones, it also loops back ADX files properly that I have made. (You may need to right-click Save As, Digibase is a bit picky)

What did you use to make it, then? I had a feeling that the tools I was using were a little iffy.

The track plays fine on what I'm using -- In_adpcm I think, for WinAmp.

Just want to make clear that your plugin is probably more accurate -- I get errors with these files in Sonic Heroes as well.

    I'm using adxencd.exe (it's a command line app) - for reference, I've uploaded it and it's readme here: http://overlord.digibase.ca/ADX_Encoder.rar

    Here's my condensed usage guide:

I was using ADXENC, but I was using something external for enabling loop support -- adxloop.exe. I didn't know that adxenc could create looping on its own. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Older versions might not - I know my version does.

Someone made I nice front end to that encoder here. Make sure you put it in the same folder as your adxencd.exe (downloaded separately).

Nice for those scared of a command prompt, but I always found the hardest part of making a looping ADX was getting the data you'd need before you were able to do that step =P

  15. Emerald Hill 2P was going well for me, so I wanted to fix that up before coming back with Aquatic Ruin; both are ready.

    ARZ - v3
Hope that's enough of an improvement.

    EHZ 2P - v1

Now, do I let you guys update the database with these and future submissions, or is it better for me to register and do it myself?

Sonic 2 HD, various 3D work
The ARZ remaster is vastly improved over the previous version, very nice work there.

I can't say the same for the EHZ track in its entirety though. The shakers in it are a massive distraction at best; those rubbed me the wrong way the entire time. If you take those away, it's quite a solid remaster.

As per music submissions, you can register and upload tracks by yourself on the Database.
Of course, under the correct section! :psyduck:

  18. Another victim of my left ear tinnitus getting in the way of monitoring my final mix; my fault.
The tams, which take after the original tune, should have been panned in the opposite directions anyhow.
    Is this better?

Your new Aquatic Ruin is definitely much better. I still have a few issues with the mixing, though.
First off, the shaker is still sticking out too much. You could just try leveling it down a bit, and/or reduce the highs a little with some EQ. (It's important to remember that the brightest sounds in a mix will tend to sound the closest to the listener.) My usual method of EQing out some brightness is to apply a parametric EQ at 20kHz, adjust the Q so the curve reaches down to about 10kHz, then just fiddle with the gain until it sounds right.
Second, too many instruments are panned in the center. Also, it sounds as if the brass section you're using had a wider sound in your previous mix, but is now nearly or completely mono, which, to me, sounds much less interesting.
Misc. stuff: The lead instruments sound too quiet, and the bass guitar sounds a bit tame. I think this may be because the bass drum is a tad loud. Then again, you could also try boosting the lower frequencies of the bass.

OK, and as for your EHZ-2P, I absolutely love where you're going with it. I only have a couple suggestions: I would try to vary or add to the instrumentation in the second half (in my mind, a soft trumpet set further back began playing along with the lead), and I would try adding some soft cymbals too; I imagined a subdued but long crash at the beginning and a soft roll leading up to the second half. Oh, and I might try going even softer with the shaker on the right -- I didn't notice it right away but the moment I did, it began distracting me from everything else.

Anyway, very good work so far, keep it up :)
