  1. Do we have any guitar or bass players here in the forums? Perhaps it would be a good idea to replace some of the synthetic guitar/bass sounds with real guitar and bass playing.

  2. My brother plays Acoustic, E- and Base-Guitar. I think he could try it.

I always imagined the Soundtrack to have a more electronic sound, due to the mega drives limited sound but would be cool to see some interpretations.

  6. LIMITED you say? Pah! Nothing goes over FM Synthesis!

That's what my whole purpose of being here is, XD. I posted some stuff a few pages back if your interested. I guess it was agreed that only Metropolis Zone and Chemical Plant Zone need replacements. The other songs don't really suit guitar. However, they didn't say anything about my bass playing, and if anything will need to be replaced for it.

I'd love to see some other instrument players here. It's weird being all by myself with this, XD.

And yes, piano love please. I'd love to see some deep piano stuff in the Sky Chase Zone, and the Ending, <3.

High-level OGG is a nice balance between file size and quality. I'm not saying encode at 96kbps, after all. =P And they're also open source.

And yes, stereo. How many people do you honestly know with 5.1 computer setups? Out of my entire circle of friends I can only think of one =P

If you ask me, I'd go with VBR mp3s with a quality of 0.
If you don't ask me, use whatever you want :P

    You rang?
This is some shit I did back in 2005 for a remix contest. I was kinda rusty and I had to rush it because I overlooked the deadline... Feel free to criticize it.

Hey guys just wanted to state my interest in the remastering/remixing of Metropolis Zone. I love the idea of real instruments originally thought of by "Blur" I believe but more guitar effects are needed in order to achieve that electronic sound so I fiddled on Cubase and Amplitube with my guitar and came up with this quick and rough recording of the guitar part of Metropolis Zone (link below). I used some digital chorus and digital reverb effects and an "overscream" pedal in Amplitube. It is in mono and is only to get the idea of the guitar effects. A stereo flanger effect or something could be added in the future though if need be. Just tossing around some ideas here.

I don't know if this has been said before, but consider this:

As most of us know, the composer of the music was in a popular band, Dreams Come True. I think it would be a good idea to listen to their music to get an idea for what the intended sound might've been like. He's even stated in an interview that he was writing the music for Sonic 2 in the middle of working on one of their albums, so that one might be a good one to check.

It's best if the music stuck to the original "sound" rather than try to remix it somehow. Overall, I think an early-90's pop sound would be best.

You know, I was always trying to find their music so I could see what their style sounds like with some higher quality stuff, but I couldn't find anything. Maybe I'll try harder this time.

EDIT: after an initial search, here is a youtube search of Dreams Come True (shortened to ?????[dori kamu]), It's kind of hard to date a lot of the songs without comparing them to a full discography,

And this song is from 1989, so maybe that will help:

DREAMS COME TRUE has some musical comparisons and information about the band. Maybe that's a good place to start?

Though I don't personally agree with adhering to that style.

  14. Hey, Blur. I listened to your rendition of the Metropolis Zone music, and it was very good indeed. My only problem is, you don't seem to have the melody transcribed very accurately. But certainly, your playing is great, and the guitar sound really suits that track.

However, I can't hear any bass playing in that recording. Could you link me to an example of your bass playing?

As a side note, I've noticed that some of the Sonic 2 music tracks have slap/pop style bass. Like Emerald Hill zone, Casino night 2 player, and etc. This is where a real instrument has the biggest advantage over a synthesizer; most synths don't have very good 'slap bass' sounds.

Well, I'm sorry for the weird timing and such. They are planning to render some of there songs with out the parts that the guitar will fill, so then I will have MUCH better melody timing and such. And sorry about the bass thing, it's like 5-6 guitar recordings, and 1 bass. It kind of got drowned out, XD.

But yes, I agree on the slap bass thing. I love what synths can do with basses, except slap bass stuff, >_<. Slap bass is about the only kind of bass playing that interests me (I like the walking bass too, <3), so sometime I'll get a recording posted up to show you.

However, I'm going to hold off on putting up stuff until more songs/ completely finished (as in everyone is happy with what it sounds like), so then they can add anything from me, or whomever wants to post instrument recordings.

Ok, I listened to every song in the first post, and here is my opinion. First of all, I don't like Tweaker's stuff at all. I think the instruments are good, but the drum beats are too forceful. I like everything Blaze did so far, and it's the only stuff I could actually see being in a game. Cinossu's stuff is cool, but too experimental.

I just think that some of Tweaker's drums are a bit... hmm, how to say this; they have a bit too much echo. The drum hits in all of the early sonic games were quick and to the point, not the loud "generic midi" style ones that plague every MIDI song ever made that uses the default windows Midi-whatchamajig-that-I-forget-the-name-of-that-has-the-instrument-patches-whatever. Not saying that his does; I'm just saying that the drums aren't fitting.

    Special Stage
I'm not *quite* happy with this one (something seems missing though I can't put my finger on it), but it's basically done.

    Wing Fortress
Ok, for this one, I think it's important that I share my view on the whole "stick to the original vs. take a few artistic liberties" debate. When I'm creating my mixes I will absolutely leave the original melodies alone. I will, however, overhaul the drum parts, because let's face it, with all the technical restrictions back then having a full drum kit was hardly the priority. The area where I think some liberties can be had and would be the most appropriate is in the arrangement. While it's surely easier just to discard mixes that aren't perfectly matched with the originals, I think we could all add our own little personal flare (if we choose to do so, of course) as long as a decent number of us think it's Ok. Personally I sort of swing both ways here. In Special Stage I didn't touch the arrangement one bit; for Wing Fortress, however, I thought that there were some beautiful opportunities to be taken. So, please let me know what you think of it. (Be sure to listen through both loops ;))

    *phew*. Rant over.

Oh, and my brass section sounds a little weak in WFZ, doesn't it? Gotta tweak those patches... And oh (#2), and please ignore the little crack at the beginning of both, LAME will not behave on my system... :P

  19. How difficult would it be to create a seperate 5.1 soundtrack and host a torrent for those few people? It would be a nice touch, if it isn't difficult or time consuming.

Special Stage is extremely upbeat and peppy, which I'm very happy with. ;) You're right though, it does seem a bit off. Probably due to the lack of reverb to make the environment feel "wider."

Wing Fortress is a bit weak, though. I like the sound, but it doesn't really feel epic enough, and is very light on supporting chords. Think you can do something about that?
