Aw damn man that really blows. I hope you continue working on it because I really get a kick out of the concept and spritework.

    Damn, that was unexpected. :(

Have you tried programs like Handy Recovery already? It saved my ass one time an old HD of mine decided to stop working.

Also try the frozen hard drive trick, if ICEknight's suggestion doesn't work. It managed to work for a guy I know on Youtube, so...

Sucks cause I was really looking forward to this hack.

  5. No harddisk can be considered lost just like that. I may be a simple trial member, but when it's down to harddisk issues, I want to clarify things up. Unless your harddisk got soaked with water while being under electrical voltage, or was dropped from the top of a high building, nothing should be wrong with it. Ok, maybe it doesn't respond to Windows anymore, and will it not be showing up at 'My computer'. In case you have a extended harddisk which isn't responding anymore it can be very simple. The casing could be burned through but the harddisk itself should be fine. I had that once before and thought I had lost everything, data going back as far as of 2004. A good friend of mine however, has a harddisk reader and simply puts the harddisk in it, and there you go, all of the data was fine. He transferred all of my data on it to a new, better extern harddisk (One with less chance to, you know, fuck up). At this very moment that particular harddisk is sitting next to my laptop.

So my advice is, don't weep about the fact that your harddisk MAY be broken, but get the fuck out there and find someone who can repair it!

Otherwise, I'm very sorry for your loss, since Mr. Needlemouse, in my eyes, was the ONLY hack that was so wacky and original that I showed it to my family and friends. Kudos to you, sir.

Unfortunate news. I was looking forward to your submission this year, especially after what you showed me months ago. Hopefully you can get back on track and try and fix something up for next year. I have had similar situations before and whilst I barely made much progress on any of my hacks, some of them had stuff I wouldn't want to redo again.

Damn. that seriously sucks a lot. And I know how much it hurts. I've worked on a Doom addon for like 5 months straight then boom, all of this hard work went down the drain. I wasn't happy...

Thanks for all the replies, everyone.
I've done everything I can to attempt to recover the files from the HDD, but now all I can do is hope that the guys at the shop will be able to salvage my stuff.

If I'm unable to recover them, I will start over eventually. =)

Have you tried all forms of data recovery? did you check the bios of your dead drive to see if the data is still there (consumed I mean)? every drive can be recovered its just how much are you willing to fork over to get it back?...

Right now I'm in a similar boat, trying to deep freeze my drive so I can get it started back up and get some personal data off of it. I keep all my important stuff on an external drive or cloud storage I won't trust internal drives anymore after an HDD crash took half of my saved files some rare shit I couldn't find anymore either.

Good luck, I still hold hope that you can retrieve your data and make this a personal lesson to never trust HDDs.

    Some random RPG project.
Darn, this was one of my favorite and most anticipated hacks I was waiting for. I really hope you're able to recover at least some of the data, because the small teasers you've shown off of the character sprites in your avatar and sig have been amazing. It'll be a real shame you'll have to re-do it all in the worst case scenario.

Good luck and thanks for still continuing this!

I appended this to my post about your screenshot in the general thread and now realise its sad irony:
    Any luck with that disk?

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who tried to help me with this and for all of the support. Had so many people not shown concern for this, I may have given up by now. :)

Yeah that screen was for the hack I would've entered into the hacking contest, which was more or less 'sonic 1 with needlemouse style graphics'. You'd have been able to switch between the two, only for preference reasons. Unfortunately that's not gonna happen, if not for a while anyway. =P

Quick update, HDD was beyond fixing, anything that wasn't sent around or online was gone, I'm now using an SVN like I should've been, and I am starting over AGAIN.
First thing I have to do is remake any sprites I lost. A lot of them were saved in one way or another, so regarding needlemouse himself, it's pretty easy.
Though all of the animations were updated, the only one I never got around to changing was the rolling/jumping sprites I made in 2007, 4 years ago!
So last night I got to work and thought I should ask you guys which one to use.

The left one please, the spikes show off the movement a little more, like a comic book where characters have lines to show the movement of an arm or leg or whatever. Not only that, you've seemed to have used the colours a lot more thoroughly in the left one =)

I am incredibly pleased and overjoyed to hear that you haven't given up on this.

That said, I would concur with the two posters above me, I would go with the left (spikes are awesome :specialed: )

    Right. Fuck majorities.

j/k The left one looks better. It would be weird having Sonic in a complete ball shape with that design. Not to mention the one to the left gives it more on a unique feel compared to the Genesis titles.
