Most annoying glitch you've ever experienced?

  1. Most annoying glitch. Earlier I was playing sonic 06, I was in wave ocean the inlet. I forgot that at the last loop you have to stay to the left or you run off the loop at the end and I died :)

CNZ in Sonic 3 Alone after Knuckles turns out the lights, if you jump along the wall with the water shield, you can get stuck in the ceiling. I got pissed at this when I was playing back in 93. Also the glitch where tails swims through the floor in hydrocity zone and dies.

In the first Chun-Nan day stage, when you go through those red platforms at the latter end of the level, Sonic did an '06 and fell through the floorboards, so I was stuck underneath. Couldn't go forward, as there was a wall, and I couldn't go back, as the screen had 'caught.'

    Inconvenient.

I don't know if it's a bug or intended behavior (though I don't know why it would be intended) but invariably when I play Sonic 2 I start going too fast and hit the side of a platform, which isn't solid, and fall through the bottom, which is apparently a bottomless pit :/ It happens especially with those pillars that move up and down in Emerald Hill Zone; it's really easy to mistime your jumps at a moving target, especially when you have, as one of my friends put it, "the hand-eye coordination of a starfish."

Also, when did you guys get all these something awful emoticons? And why no coolbutt? :c00lbutt:

Speaking of that, lately the first hill in EHZ1 (red spring'd hill) (on a generation II Genesis, rev. 00 Sonic 2) has been the source of an odd occurance where I hit it at a certain angle or speed, and I phase right through it and fall to my death.

I didn't even realise there was an ice cap glitch with Tails in Sonic 3. That either shows superiority to the game or total n00bness, not sure which.

That Super Sonic glitch in Sonic 2 was frustrating, as was any glitch in any Sonic game which allowed you to become helplessly trapped in a wall, ceiling or floor. Not good.

I think somebody's already mentioned it, but the glitch at the end of Labyrinth act 1 in Sonic 1 is a cruel one. If you roll along the floor at speed on the platform where the end of level sign is, the screen pans down, turns green and a weird error code comes up and the game freezes. I can remember completing that act of Labyrinth, feeling proud of myself that I survived the ordeal and then experiencing that glitch. I cried.

2,4 and 5 are bugs that I have never run into despite knowing about 4, just avoiding it isn't hard.

Never had a problem with the lamps and I have a launch day copy of sonic 2, and are you sure you are not hitting the hand spikes on the final boss mech instead of the black part? You have to jump carefully, or if he is landing you miss the black part or his head you will go through him (I think, body has no collision it's the arms that hurt you?)

    Ugh.

Might be stating the obvious here, but it seems this glitch is about timing. I accidentally jumped after hitting the signpost in MCZ (With all emeralds collected and over 50 rings) and managed to get away with it - Sonic got stuck running in the air, but the 'Act passed' and scoring screen came up and the game continued as normal. As pictured above, I wasn't as fortunate in Metropolis. Apologies if this is common knowledge, but does anyone know why the glitch occurs at certain points after you've jumped after hitting the signpost and not others? Or is there a split-second making the difference between continuing and a crashed game?

Well, if you can clear the screen then you're golden -- the act results screen loads once Sonic is off-screen.

Incidentally, at that same point if Sonic is not in the air the controls lock.

Not really. If Sonic's center is past the end of the screen, it'll trigger, even if a small part of the body is still visible.

2 is really easy to reproduce - the star-posts seem to be sorted by x-coordinate, so if you hit one further to the right, all previous ones are marked as used too. Try hitting the last one in EHZ1 and both previous ones will show as used. Incidentally while testing this I found a fifth star-post in EHZ2 I've never seen before - on a small floating island above and slightly to the left of the double loop with (what I though was) the first star-post. Never looked for a fifth as there are seven without this one, but it is a good deal easier to get to that the one I had been using near the end of the level!

4 I first encountered in Robotnik's Revenge, probably due to the spin-dash being available

5 is harder to reproduce, but very annoying. The bug is east to spot since you go right through the body and hit the arm somewhere around the elbow which should be impossible with correct collision. It seems to be related to hitting him very low on the body or alternatively very high - perhaps there are points where there are small gaps between objects making up the robot?

Actually, the star-post "glitch" you cite is intended behaviour; they actually have a user-defined internal flag to sort them by number; hit number 5, for example, and all lower-numbered posts will be expired. A flag of "0" will be a post that is expired automatically, I have no idea why.

Um, because 0 is probably the default value and is used when you just started the level and didn't hit any star post yet?

    Doing absolutely nothing
Far too many to post, but the most annoying ones would have to go to the numerous Light Speed dash bugs in recent games. Tap the button, Sonic either dashes off too quickly or doesn't respond until a few seconds later.

Just been reminded of another glitch that irritates the hell out of me while playing Ice Cap (Though it happens in any zones with steep slopes - Marble Garden in particular). I hate when you get a speed up and you go so quickly down a slope or a hill with rings on it while wearing a lightning shield, and you go that fast that the rings don't register and instead they fly up and down the screen behind you on a loop for about 10 minutes, following you as you go but you can never get them. Dunno what the glitch is called and I certainly don't know why it happens but it's fucking annoying, especially when you're in Super or Hyper form and you need the rings. It happens in Sonic 3 and they still hadn't fixed the bug in S3&K. Dunno how it was overlooked, I've experienced this same glitch many times over the years =/

Stay still in the same place and it just take them a few seconds to catch you =P It isn't a glitch as much as it's a limitation of the hardware and such. A speed cap would have helped though.

No, sometimes they don't, in Y-wrapping levels such as MGZ1 and ICZ1, where rings can keep on looping through the Y axis, probably because of a bug with the wrapper itself that overflows something. But this is only speculation.

This has happened to me multiple times, and if I do not consciously attempt to counteract this, I will slide down into ground and die. Every time.

I must be the unluckiest man alive if not everyone suffers from this.
