For me personally, it would have to be the atrocious error in stand-alone Sonic 3, where playing as Tails it is virtually impossible to complete the Ice Cap Zone due to falling through the ice at slide junctions, over and over again.

I only ever succeeded past it once.

Thankfully however, they seemed to correct this in Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

To avoid that glitch you just need to enter the special stage through the big ring hidden behind the wall right before the first slide. It's not possible to survive otherwise. I didn't check the actual coding for that, but I'm inclined to believe that they forgot to set the level to wrap itself vertically, so Tails dies when he reaches the lower Y limit. Entering and exiting the special stage instead correctly sets the wrapping flag.

Using Team Blast in Sonic Heroes and falling through the floor because of it. Only happened to me once, but it was on the last boss. :psyduck: Pretty lame.

  4. The last boss doesn't have a floor, unless you mean the second to last one =P.

Nineko: I've never noticed that, just played it now and it seems you're right o.o

The second to last one, where you aren't super. Technically part of the final battle. :P

I just tested that. If you jump before falling down the first hole with one, you will pass by without dying, but if you just walk off and colide with that angle you will die. I also didn't know that one before.

That doesn't work. Even if you fly down there the glitch occurs.

You probably tried the glitch again after dying once and restarting at the star post, in which case the wrapping flag is set correctly.

It really annoys me when I'm playing as Super Sonic in Sonic 3 alone. I usually manage to unlock Super Sonic before finishing Hydrocity Zone. At the Hydrocity boss Super Sonic just runs straight past the boss area to the capsule and I have to drown so that I can carry on playing.

:psyduck: Whoever just grabbed the nearest Sonic 2 ROM for the XBLA version instead of that fixed one in Sonic Complimation.

Not rather annoying, since when I feel bored, I TRY to cause this glitch, but in Sonic the Hedgehog, Marble Zone 1, just after the first crushing thingies, you can cause the camera to move upwards, therefore bringing the level boundaries up with it, and kill Sonic.

    I try causing it a lot. =P

I don't know if it was just in my specific Sonic 2 SMS cart, but when I first got it there was a lovely bug in Sky High Zone Act 1, right near the end of the act. I'd fall down from gliding to the bottom of the screen and, naturally, lose all rings, but then I'd jump to get out, and if I was over the floor by the end of the level, Sonic would just start spinning in midair, and the only thing I was able to do after that was turn left and right, and eventually just turn the console off. Very infuriating at the age of 7, believe me. :P On that cart I could do it without fail, but I took it back for a replacement and I haven't been able to reproduce it since.

The Sonic Advance series is one big glitch series.

    Sonic Advance 1
    - grinding a rail so fast the game forgets to set your plane flag back to normal, and fall to your death.
    - Tails AI in Sonic and Tails mode is crap and induces lag. In the 3rd zone Tails will frequently run around and pop the balloons necessary for Sonic to pounce on in order to gain elevation and proceed through the level.
    - getting stuck in the odd spin-loops in the first zone's second act.

    Sonic Advance 2
    - sticking into walls in the first zone
    - sticking into the top of loops at extremely high speeds
    - I wish bottomless pits counted as glitches

    Now for the Genesis titles...

    Sonic 1
    - Starlight Zone loops can get you stuck in a wall, occasionally layer change neglects causes you to have to back-track to build up speed to attempt to go through the loop again.
    - final boss... I always manage to cause the infinite hit glitch...

    Sonic 2
    - Super Sonic bug
    - Tails AI constantly floating around in Casino Night Zone

    Sonic 3 (& Knuckles)
    - none really, except those already mentioned.

    Sonic CD
    - occasionally the Time Warp leaves you trapped in a wall or damned to eternity under a floor (probably just bad luck)

    The damn spike bug!

The amount of times I died at a group of spikes when I was younger due to this blasted bug!

I find it to be really unfair.

That's quite a glitch. I seem to recall managing that once on real hardware, years ago. Sadly, I no longer have my Master System, nor the games, but yeah...

Many glitches in the games are rather hilarious to me... and in 8-bit Sonic 2, I loved making the level music continue to play after I finished the level. If you got invincibility near the end of the level, and were able to hit the signpost at the right time, you'd be almost off the screen, and suddenly, the invincibility would wear off, causing the level music to start again. It'd keep playing on the score screen, and once the counting stopped, there'd be a brief extension of one note when the game went to load the next level's title card. XD Good times.

That's because it's not a bug. See: Spike damage behavior

I recall one, I don't know whether it was the rom hack I was playing (S2 Long version, I believe) or just a glitch in the original game, but in Mystic Cave act 1, I remember there was a part where you were going left, and had to drop down, and there would be an invisible wall. I ran away, and ran back, incase it was just a minor glitch, but it was still there, so I died, and it worked again, but died again before I got to another starpost, and when I came back, on my last life, guess who was back. No continues, either, so I was basically stuck unless I could muster up 100 rings, 50000 points, or find a life box.
