Is there a way to modify the genesis usa version moddel one to output in s-video then get an adapter to connect to a modern hdmi port; specifically, 720i?

  2. This is more suited for the reverse engineering forum, but I'm gonna lend my hand to this.

Did a quick search and got a lot of results. The first thing that came up for me was this.

  4. Oh, dear. I'm really sorry. I should have read your post more closely. I decided to look for HDMI mods for Genesis model 1. The first that came up was this FPGA-based method.

Just a heads up -- all models of the Genesis use native RGB internally and can output RGB as well. S-Video is a poorer video choice than RGB, as it combines multiple signals into two wires for video. HDMI converters work by separating combined signals like s-video back into RGB. As such, going from S-Video to HDMI is actually going from RGB -> S-Video -> RGB -> HDMI. Thats a lot of lossy and unnecessary conversion that hurts the image quality. A smarter option is to go from RGB to HDMI itself, which is RGB -> HDMI. There are lots of really cheap adapters online that can do this, just look for any SCART RGB to HDMI converter. Looking on amazon real quick, the first result was $7, and I'm sure you can find them cheaper. You'll need a Sega Genesis RGB SCART cable, but those are plentiful. It's the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to get a Genesis connected to a modern HDTV with the best image quality. The RGB to HDMI adapters have settings which let you set the output resolution (i.e. 720i, 1080p, etc).

Those cheap SCART to HDMI things do not use RGB at all, only the composhit pin on the SCART connector. (and they helpfully deinterlace stuff for you and have REC.601 digitizing so all game sources will look like a blurry mess regardless)

If you want RGB you don't have too many options : OSSC and its flavors, some flavors of RetroTink, GBScontrol based stuff, things like Framemeister and Extron hardware. The first two are the best options, plus you can use them with many other machines too.

Ah, I have a retrotink and an OSSC, so I just assumed all were like that.

You didn't need to be so rude and terse with him.

Let me break it down for you:
If you're trying to get 720p (720i is not a standard) HDMI out of a Genesis with higher quality video, your best bet would be to not even modify the console and use an RGB cable. No soldering needed, no risk of damage to the console.

So the shopping list consists of two things:
    1. Genesis RGB SCART cable
    2. RGB SCART to HDMI with 720p output (one with actual RGB support)

    You're welcome.
