Interesting. I continued to doubt this theory myself, knowing that the songs taken out in Sonic and Knuckles collection merely used DAC samples, which could not be properly represented with their somewhat slipshod midi stuff. However, the Smooth Criminal and Ice Cap connection seems almost too obvious to ignore. But, besides a cameo of similarity between Casino zone and 'Jam', I think there is a closer meaning in this.

They went to great pains removing the music as much as possible, But they couldn't remove all of it, and thus, certain things remained. I still can't see the Stranger/Credits connection, but I can see a cameo in Carnival Night and the whole Ice Cap. Thusly, I think that they reworked Carnival Night to remove most of the music, but couldn't remove all of it in time. (It takes a while to compose stuff.) As for Ice Cap, it was another one COMPLETELY left alone due to time. Certain other Sonic 3-only tracks (The ones replaced by Sonic and Knuckles's own tracks) also seem suspicious.

As for the Sonic and Knuckles collection stuff, I don't quite believe they swapped it out over anything other than the DAC samples. Show me one song in S&K collection that was ported but had those sound samples in it, though, and I'll change my mind.

Good work, though; the Ice Cap stuff is the best theory, in my opinion, especially the Smooth Criminal connection. I certainly couldn't make anything near as professional a video. Also, a lot of what I'm saying is hearsay, save for the S&K collection midi technical stuff. I know a bit about that.

This is fucking brilliant. I love how you included footage from each example, including the music videos to bring more visual depth to the article along with the music.

Those few months when Shade discovered it were vital IMO. This is certainly one of the bigger discoveries in terms of the music department, and that being my favorite part of the series, it brings a smile to my face. :)

You should really make more of these, seriously. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a video has uncountable words. =P

Of course it does. At 30FPS, a minute is worth one million, eight hundred thousand words.

  6. Not really. I don't hear it either.

As for the video, awesome stuff, Qjimbo. The similarity in the Ice Cap music, in particular, amazes me. I never really participated in this whole MJ/S3 thing, so I didn't know much about it before now. Good job making this, and I hope you have time for more stuff like this in the future.

This is an extremely nice video; Very proffesional. I vote this for archiving in the future.

Anyway, I am actually very happy, proud, and most of all, honored, that I was able to contribute to the Sonic scene; Especially in such a major way. In all my years of lurking, I always thought I'd consider myself lucky to become a member. Never did I imagine I'd be making a contribution, especially such and impactful one. So thanks guys; Especially Tweaker for the praise and Qjimbo for crediting me. While I'm at it, I may as well say: I love being here, I love participating and being a part of the Sonic Research scene, and I love being around you guys. Its been every bit as awesome as I imagined it to be while lurking, and I plan on staying until the bloody end. Okay, end sappy ramble :P

I must say, its a real trip going back to play Sonic 3 and thinking "Man...and all these years, I never new that Michael Jackson composed this."

Oh, and by the way, the Stranger in Moscow connection; It's there. Its probably a lot more noticeable in an actual clear version of the song, with headphones..You know, all that good stuff. Even then, it is clearly there. Just slower, it seems.

  8. I can hear the relations of all songs. Not always clear as day, but there.

    Two problems:

    1) QJimbo does not have a narritive quality voice *runs*
    2) Why did you not use my MIDI recordings for the PC stuff? They're from the hardware the PC composers used! =P

Other than that, great work =P

I know I know, but I wanted to get it out in a day rather than auditioning various people to find someone with a good voice.

However, if anyone wants to redo the narration and has a good quality mic, please pm me!

Could've done, but I thought more people would've heard it in the Microsoft GW synth.

As for people doubting the Stranger in Moscow and Credits link, well I really dunno what to say to that. It's blindingly obvious to me.

    Glad you guys enjoyed it!

Actually, I rather enjoyed Jim as a narrator this time around. It really set the mood of things, IMO.

Is it possible you can render another version that's 15MB or less? I wanted to show it to saxman, but it was too big. :P

    being an asshole =P
Reci?n ahora noto que eres de Espa?a, IceKnigth XD As? que supongo que deber?as poder leer esto...

BTW, returning to English, and to the video specifically... I never noticed all those similarities (but yes the speechs and such). However, very good job! Really well documented... And QJimbo's voice isn't as bad as it looks (no, it isn't a joke). I though it was going to be worse when I read the comments about his voice...

Anyways, I agree that the video must be archieved, too.

    S?, claro. =P

    More stuff...
We've been knowing there was some connection ever since we saw part of MJ's team in the Sonic 3 credits a while ago. And many people had noticed the obvious similarity in the past.
    Is it? How'd you know?
That covers about everything speculated about it... The only known stuff is what Roger Hector told us.

Just listen to some of his songs, they often feature "Ow!" and other spliced up vocal noises. Maybe I should've put in some clips of that too.

Yeah but I meant known as in known similarities that have been spotted. It's a bit of a technicality but I think the rest of the video makes it very clear that this is speculation. I tried to keep it as objective as possible, although I admit I was pushing the arguement that MJs music is still in the game.

There's nothing wrong with presenting something without hard facts. Hard facts would've made the documentary pointless anyway "Roger Hecto said this, then we found out a SEGA employee said this. THE END". Besides some of these speculations are close to hard facts, such as Stranger In Moscow's chord sequence being identical to Sonic 3's. Try and find another song with that chord progression. It's a very distinctive MJ sound.

Besides you say that the Roger Hector interview is known information, how do you calssify this "known" info? Just because it's an interview doesn't give it any validity, just look at the Brenda Ross interview. His memory of the music being replaced entirly might be incorrect, but so could his memory of how much MJ was involved. In a way, we have no hard facts. Just lots and lots of coincidences and clues :)

It's fairly obvious. Being a Michael jackson fan and having all of his albums thus far (Totalling at over 130 songs) I can safely say that is very much his style, both vocally and musically.

True. We can never be 100 percent sure. However, it seems to me that all these people we interview are always flaky about their memories. Like Brenda Ross or half of the other Sonic 2 guys, and especially that guy with the horrid grammar that named Dr. Robotnik. Who's to say that Rojer didn't get his facts a bit messed up, or was simply covering up to prevent the possibility of a lawsuit being filed by someone? And aside from all of that, the musical similarities combined with all of MJ's alleged tracks being replaced in the PC version, as well as one of MJ's team members being in the credits...I think it's safe to assume he had some amount of involvment in the music. And that is what I believe.

Oh and by the way Jimbo, I thought you did a great job narrorating :)

I didn't think anything of it at first but after watching that video I'm definately convinced that MJ was originally involoved. Well put together video as well.
