Ah shoot. And I still don't know who's faster, Sonic or Mario! I guess I'll never know now. :flunked:

I know and I'm actually a big fan of it. Just wish an idea like this could get a proper team and budget.

I haven't touched the Mario & Sonic games in years, but the fact one of the reasons for the series ending is NFTs is...not how I expected the series to end, nor I wanted too. Hasn't NFTs been on the decline? You almost see nobody talk about them. As I saw one person on YouTube put it: "Literally any other reason why the series could have ended would have been better than this."

Oh well. Hope this means we'll see them cross over into another genre like Kart racing or something.

Games take a while to develop, and they typically want the Mario & Sonic games to come out before the Olympics, so I'm going to wager that the IOC made this dumb decision around the time NFTs were popular which was... what, 3-4 years ago?

And yet some of the most beloved Sonic games ever have multiple wildly-different gameplay styles...

Boll Deluxe is pretty freaking awesome for what it is. Imagine that Sonic Jam 6 bootleg

but it's actually really fun to play.

Also some of Sonic's abilities from the Genesis games are actually usable here. Also, in addition to that also, there are multiple playable characters.

I guess if you were to slap me in charge of a Mario/Sonic platformer crossover, this would probably be the best way to handle it?

Honestly I think Tokyo 2020 was probably the perfect one to end the series with all things considered.

I feel like a Mario/Sonic platformer crossover would work best in 2D. I don't think it will ever happen though, I just don't think Nintendo are interested in making it and there's no way they'll let a non-Nintendo studio make a traditional Mario platformer. Maybe an RPG with platforming elements.

The thing I wonder is, it's been almost 20 years since Sonic was revealed for Smash Bros Brawl and since then we've had the Olympic games series, Sonic being a Smash mainstay and being referenced in Mario Maker and Mario Kart 8. I kind of wonder if maybe the novelty of a Mario & Sonic crossover has worn off?

I was a kid when this reveal happened, I had never even owned a SEGA console at the time but even still this was the most mindblowing thing to me. Feels like a moment that is long gone.

If we face a future where Eggman will never do rhythm gymnastics ever again truly this is one bleakest moments in human history

  9. I've played that. Honestly, I think that game has a hefty set of "Traditional Mario" levels in which the Sonic style of movement does NOT work well in. The Sonic characters in that game are much too floaty to work in SMB1's more precision-oriented style of level design. The Sonic characters do work alright in the game's more open-ended levels, though.

Honestly the regular Tokyo 2020 game interested me, admittedly some of it was just because it was using the same tech as Sonic games are using, but it's still something I'd like to grab to say I have it. When they made it free on Steam temporarily I enjoyed what I played even if I was running on a sub suboptimal laptop. It's weird they didn't at least want a successor to that.

I think the olympics, the event where countries put away their differences and come together for friendly competition, was a good metaphor for mario and sonic, long time rivals, symbolically putting away their differences to make a game. And I really liked the original wii game when it came out.
I like the idea of a Mario and Sonic rpg, just because I want to be able to mix and match characters for my party from both series. But they might not want another so soon after all the TTYD remake, the SMRPG remake, the new Mario and Luigi, and the Rabbids thing.

Thats why I propose Mario and Sonic Slay the Spire Card Based Rogue Lite. The children yearn for card based rogue lites.

The notion that "Mario and Sonic gameplay can't work together" is funny to me because both franchises are no strangers to experimental and mixed-style gameplays.

It's me. I'm children. Give me Mario & Sonic Balatro and I'll never need to play another game ever again.

Actually just give us Mario & Sonic at the Casino Games, in which children will unlearn all the sportsmanship they learned from Olympic Games and learn values and skills they'll actually use -- cheating, deceiving, gambling and harassing the bartender for another drink.

We can talk a big game about how Sega doesn't need them but these were the most reliable selling games in the Sonic brand for a long time. The first game did explosive numbers on the Wii during a relative low point. I'm sure Sega and Nintendo would rather revitalize the series than let it slip away.

And any kind of action game, platformer, RPG was always going to be way more resources than what these games were: simple, low commitment party games that probably made way more than they had any right to. I think if they get tempted to fill the void it will be another party game of similar scope without the Olympics branding.

The next Mario Party is "Mario & Sonic Party"

That might actually be pretty fun. Minigames and boards based on the two franchises.

(I also want them to make "Wario Party" where the mini games are WarioWare-style Micro Games, but that's another convo.)

It's funny to me because classic Sonic gameplay is pretty derivative of classic Mario gameplay (including a fair bit of the momentum-based movement), and it wouldn't be too hard to imagine how you might mechanically bridge the gap for them. Just say Mario can run along the smooth slopes in Sonic but he can't roll, etc. Where's the actual difficulty with this idea come in?

As long as they don't bring back the card system from Shuffle, I'm in.
