"Dreamcast fans had reason to get excited when video surfaced of the highly-anticipated, yet cancelled Dreamcast horror-adventure game Agartha surfaced for the first time last summer. The game, which was developed by French developer No Cliché, was shown in playable form after it was found in a bundle of GD-ROMs that was bought on eBay.

Now, it appears that Laurent C., who has many Dreamcast prototypes in the past, has come into possession of the Agartha code and plans to release it online on Jan. 15. We're not quite sure how much of the game is playable at this time, however, but we've been told that Frederick Raynal, the former director of No Cliché, is involved in some form with this release.

Like many Dreamcast games in development in 2001, it was cancelled after SEGA announced it was discontinuing production of the system, and No Cliché soon went out of business altogether. We're really excited to learn more about what state of completion this release of Agartha is in and can't wait to get our hands on it!"

The Dreamcast lives on! Amazing to see given the length of time since the console very briefly took over the world. There's so many cancelled gems from that 2001 timeframe (GunValkyrie was originally intended to be a Dreamcast project and there were strong rumours Jet Set Radio 2/Future and Super Monkey Ball were too). God I'd love an alternate universe where the Dreamcast persisted and survived for even just two more years. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if all these cancelled games from 2001 actually released, like the late-game cancellation of Half Life for example.

Got a Youtube link to video for this, or screenshots?

Wow... the game is so grim .... it's a shame it was never released... I always loved horror games... Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Forbidden Siren, etc ... thanks for sharing ...

I remember reading somewhere that JSRF on the Dreamcast was very far along and it was only like two months of development on the Xbox or something like that. Im probably wrong on those numbers but i wouldn't be surprised if a playable demo of stuff like PDO or JSRF leak one day. It was even confirmed that the build of TJE3 that was leaked a few years back as not the final one and more complete builds exist out there.

Yeah I remember reading in the official Dreamcast magazine (UK) that "Jet Set Radio 2" was confirmed and very much in development for the DC and that project eventually became Future for the Xbox. Sega were firing on all cylinders and were at their creative peak back then. Their teams were on fire. So though we did eventually get versions of all these cancelled DC games on other consoles I sometimes wish the DC had survived and prospered and had a few more years of life in it. It's remembered as a legendary console despite burning bright for such a short amount of time so imagine if it had another three years of Sega hits like Jet Set Radio 2 and Shenmue 3 amidst the plethora of other in-development projects that ended up multi-platform.

It may have never have succeeded against the PS2 regardless of what came out, but it could have held its own on the basis of its incredible games, to which I wish there were more.

I wouldn't expect to see much out of this build of Agartha - details were always thin on the ground, but it was in a very early state in late 2000. That is to say, it's probably more "tech demo" than "video game".

And frankly it's not half as interesting as Toy Commander. Pretty mind-blowing for 1999 that you could fly toy planes down the plumbing system of a house. A big step up from the PlayStation, which seemed to struggle just rendering a 3D wall.

If one looks at the sales, one realizes that it did not really fail :) http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=37694
But yeah, its supposedly just the demo of "Agartha" though my bet it is more far along than ecco 2 on the dc
