It was close, but our winner is LocalH's variation of the logo: Original Post: While I'm busy working on getting some initial groundwork done for the engine, let's get some ideas for logos going! All ideas are fair game, bonus points if you have examples of design styles you feel would be best suited for the project. Even more points if you can visualize an idea on your own! After enough ideas have been submitted (we'll go for 5 as the minimum here), we'll hold a vote to determine whose we should use.
Well, as a graphic designer I believe that we should aim for something simple, easy to remember, and inspired by something related to the engine/name. My thinking is a Mobius Stripe, also known to be the used as the recycle symbol shape. The colours are the basic colours used on the old Japanese covers, mostly Sonic, Tails and Knuckles colours too, the shading is inspired by Sonic Colours Logo, and the font is just a nice Art-deco-like font I found. It's really basic but this thing was made in 5 minutes in a hurry, I have a Japanese exam in an hour or so :v: Edit; added a simplier variation, more accord to current design trends. Less bevels, less stuff.
Damn you and your professional ability to realize things Elratauru That's basically what I was thinking. A logo that incorporated an actual mobius strip. I'd argue that it needs less gloss, however. I'll try and cook up something else myself later.
Just throwing an idea out here: what if you made the strip a *lot* thinner, and put the text "Mobius Engine" at the centre of it? See what that looks like..
On the simple version, I'd remove any sign of gloss from it, and have it look fairly matte. Gloss always seems to look wrong on "simplified" logos.
Yeah, I guess I'll do pretty much the same with this one. I knew something was weird, and the Colours-like shadding looks meh here. The words are too thick to fit like it should, however I made a thinner version of it: I agree, I was just using the Colours logo based style. Thanks :v: At first I was too...however a planet would make it too "Mozilla-like" :P
Maybe no one else thinks it matters, but perhaps the top strip should be the blue one? I'm thinking in terms of prioritising the colours according to character. If it were me, I'd've tried top=blue, left=yellow orange Tailsish, right=red.
The question would then be, does it need to be that font that you're using here for this? This is kind've the idea I was thinking of [below], but perhaps make the black font a little more interesting. I suppose you can ignore this idea if you're planning to use the strip itself without any text on it to be used as an 'icon' of some sort? Also, how would it look if it had shadows on the bends of the strips (to give it a slightly more 3D look)? Just a wonderment..
I'm gonna be honest, I kinda really don't like that font. Here is a quick mockup I made: And here's what I changed: Different font (Mabella) Rotated the logo for blue on top Lighter blue text with outline Ignore the obviously-wrong lighting, 'tis merely the result of rotating Elratauru's image instead of trying to recreate it. Also, the drop shadow on the text probably doesn't need to be there, I was experimenting and forgot to remove it when I was done. But to be honest, I mainly did this for the sake of using a font with a higher x-height. Initially, I was going to use Steelfish, but I discovered it has some pretty annoying alignment issues, which saddens me because I like the overall design of the font.
The font is a bit debatable I think, and honestly, having Mobius Engine right in the middle of the logo kinda looks like crap. The mobius strip is kinda the insignia here, placing text right on top of it draws attention solely to the text, not the insignia. RE: Font. I'd say the current font and letter arrangement fits well, especially if we go for block letters.
Maybe something more....3Dish or irregular? Also, I agree that the bold font is kinda bold, so lets do something more stylish with a nice Helvetica.
Do we really have to do blue/yellow/red? I know what you're going for, but it reminds me the visual studio 2008 logo too much.
Not really, we can always use more colours, I'm open to suggestions and stuff like that. I was just using those colours because of I didnt used green because that would make it way too "google" like.
The one on the left I'd say is near perfect. The text is just subtle enough to not be a huge distraction, and the irregularity isn't to a degree that it basically looks like a rubber band like the one on the right. I'd say it's down to this one, and the matte version of the first one.
How much longer have I got before this is going to go down to a poll vote? I don't have a good enough connection to get Gimp on this laptop in any reasonable amount of time right now.
I think that'll largely depend on if everyone can agree on one of Elratauru's designs or not. We'll give it something like a week. If more people start posting things, then I'll extend the deadline by another week for submissions, and we'll put a vote to it.
