    Shading 2 with more contrast on light / shadowed parts will suffice.


    And yes, while ICE suggestion is usually correct (especially for several character sprites), when working on BG, it's almost impossible to keep things looking HD without a bit of reinterpretation and / or new details.

    Really, S2HD is not S2HQX4.

    Not bad. The shadow from the grass should be a lot darker, though. Also, in your version, the grass color doesn't change as dramatically going from top to bottom.
     
  4. So what? The original changed dramatically because they only had a limited number of colours to use. Why reproduce those faults when you can make something look better?

    The top of the grass seems to...curly. When I look at it, it just doesn't look right. I think it should be more spike shaped.

    Nice, everything looks well put together. One thing I noticed when comparing the Genesis picture with the HD picture was that the Genesis picture looks like the grass's shading went up further.

    The grass shading on the original has more extreme high-lights and lowlights which seems to give the grass a little more depth on the Genesis.
    Excellent work - I like the tips of the grass (the slight curl to the spikes looks great).

    Thanks, and yeah. The last level art coordinator made a mock up of the grass and that's what I based mine off. I think the general consensus amongst people is that it looks fine the way I'm making it now. That's not to say that it won't change at all in the future, but this style looks good. Besides, we want to take some liberties with the designs here and there.

    Ok, nothing huge here, but I've updated my first metablock that I made to match my current style of making grass. I fixed up the shading and the shadows on it.

    I've noticed something slightly odd about the grass' shadow on the checkered area.

    I was going to ask you if you were going to change the shadow to fit around the 3d checkered 'tube', but it seems to strike me a bit odd that a shadow would be longer just off the center of the the 'tube', than a blade of grass which is lower down than the said blade - and is in the center of it.

    I'm not exactly sure how shadows work in an instance like this, but it just seems a little illogical to me *shrugs*

    Weren't sure how I could explain it easier, so I'll illustrate it for you :v:

    My mind loves to think with 3-dimensional shapes, so no, that picture wasn't necessary. :P Anyways, yeah, I should mess with that a bit.

    Alright, I messed with it a bit and the "center" shadows are now the longest on the pillar tile thing. I would make them a bit longer, but then I'd be getting into another tile's territory, and I don't really think that spot needs another tile all to itself.

  18. Nice, but where are the highlights on the tan blocks (like those in your July 8 post)? They look too flat to me without them.

    The shadows? It's a WIP and I haven't done those yet. I only have the shadows done on the bottom parts.

    Its not fair, Gam takes all the glory for the wips =P

    ...Ohhh my wips should stay in the dark, They will be a nice surprise in the next release haha :3
