I can't for the life of me understand why everyone raves about Samsung's super AMOLED lcd screens. I've seen 5 different Epics and a Captivate, and they all look the same to me up close: Grainy, with a screen door effect. They remind me a lot of those shitty old Cloudbook/ Sylvania G netbooks. When I compare these screens to my relatively old HTC Hero, it's a huge difference: My hero is crisp and bright, just like any high quality PC lcd monitor. Am I the only one who thinks these AMOLED screens look horrible?
Yeah, due to the pixel layout, they have a "grainy" effect to them. It takes some getting used to, but eventually you don't notice it and the clarity of the colours just wows the eyes like no tomorrow. In my not so humble opinion.
I've been looking over the Galaxy S line for a while (as I'm getting the Epic in two days) and yes, if you look closely you see the pixels, but it's not near as bad as the 1-3rd gen iPhones. The colors in the Super AMOLED are really vivid, and have super-dark blacks (as the LEDs aren't lit for black) oh, and the screen is blueish when turned off—Awesome!
The screen turns pinkish when your finger is on the screen. Slightly less awesome, but Galaxy S is still awesome!
I found a great picture that demonstrates what I'm on about This is what a Galaxy S screen looks like up close. BLEGH.
I have sensitive enough eyesight that I see it even at a normal viewing distance. It's not like I was looking for excuses to bitch the first time I saw one of these; my best friend got the epic, and when he handed it to me I just held it like normal and immediately noticed a screen door effect.
