IIRC the version I'd been using was marked as Rev.09. Could've been mis-marked though. Maybe I'll give it another try one of these days. If those issues are cleared up, it'd probably actually be useful now :v: Also, my old PC came with XP SP1a and only 256MB of RAM, 32MB of which was used for the Intel X-TREEM GRAFIX 2!!!! that was built in. Slowest piece of shit you could possibly imagine, until I put in an extra 2GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card.
I can't shell out any cash for some ram or a new card at the moment, so thats why I'm pondering a different OS. Out of curiousity though, how much would some ram and a new card run me?
Since you're using what is presumably a really old pile of crepe, it would use DDR Memory, which isn't made anymore and rather expensive (relative to DDR2-3). On another note, seeing as you don't play games, why not try a distro of linux? Can't help you with the graphics card, but with regards with RAM it depends on what kind of RAM your rig takes, how much it can take, how many slots are available, etc. If your computer was manufactured as opposed to custom built (and from you saying that XP Media Cenetr Edition came preinstalled, I'm sure it is manufactured), use something like Crucial's website to look up your computer so you can see the situation. Crucial is a RAM manufacturer, so it'll also show you how much buying from them costs, which tends to be a little higher than you can get it for elsewhere like from Amazon; eBay, too, but that can get tricky with people selling high-density RAM which is shit for desktops.
My comp is from 2006, I think. It's not OLD old, but its definitely showing its age. Also, I play games on my computer all the time, mostly old ones. The most recent thing I've been able to run on this computer that's a commercial product is Sonic Riders. Gaming is the main thing I do on my computer, you just won't see me running Crysis or anything. So, yeah, Linux would do nothing for me.
512MB DDR1 stick is all it needs... video is on the weak side but if you don't play (modern) games, it does not matter.
From what I analyzed, it seems like he can max up to 2GB of RAM for his rig. A little pricey though of course seeing as how he's have to actually replace the two 256MB sticks with 1GB sticks or insert 512MB sticks into each DIMM slot. 1GB sticks that are compatible with your rig are probably around $50 and 512MB around $25. Any update will be very noticeable at this point. On a sidenote, if you're interested, your PC can take AGP 8X graphic cards.
Yeah I better upgrade soon then. I was playing minecraft earlier and my comp had trouble rendering that at times, of all things. The radioshack down by my house might have what I'm looking for. (Just as soon as one of the restaurants I applied to gives me a goddamn call.)

I hate to be the "it works fine for me" guy, but yeah, been running tinyxp10 on my media center pc just fine I'd rather be running Ubuntu on it but Ubuntu hasn't had working s-video out for the ATI Rage LT Pro for a while now
I haven't installed Rev 10 because I wasn't going to download a DVD image, but Christmas 2008 Edition was generally awful. I couldn't even get ModPlug Tracker working on there.
I took some earlier advice and did some tweaks to my own system as opposed to installing a new one. Using this guide, I was able to tweak my system's performance greatly, at the cost of some of XP's bells and whistles. Before when I was running Minecraft, for example, it would stutter and hang severly every minute or so with the lowest possible rendering settings and several processes and other programs, including explorer, closed down. Now I can run Minecraft just fine on medium rendering settings, and still be able to run winamp and even have a browser and IM program running in the background. I do get an occasional stutter, but it's not as bad as it was. Still, a bit more ram would be nice.
Well good to see something worked. And yeah, more RAM obviously would help, but if money's low I totally feel 'ya. Waiting at least gives you more time to shop around for lower prices.
