Huh. More generic animal-people around might've made a lot more sense during that whole arc where Sonic's world and Earth started merging. Or even during the last season where Sonic's planet seems strangely devoid of any intelligent life barring the core cast.

The humans aren't a big deal for me. Though it might help the suspension of disbelief if there were other animal characters who stood around like helpless sheep with them, or just more humans like the GUN Commander who were obviously attempting to do something about the current crisis.

None at the moment I'm afraid.
    I resent that remark!

Not all dinosaurs were unintellegent you know. I can't believe there are people who perceive all dinosaurs as Stupid, Slow moving, unintelligent lizards.
They have more in common with everyday birds than reptiles. hmph.

I actually don't care if you are referring to Stegosaurus as it wasn't very smart at all. However, its lack of brains was made up for with its lethal tail spikes.

    Back on subject though:

I honestly have no problem with humans in Sonic games, minus Princess Elise in Sonic 06'. She fucking got on my nerves. "OH NOES SONIC DIED MAYBE IF WE COLLECT THE CHAOS EMERALDS AND I SUCK HIS FACE, HE'LL COME BACK TO LIFE AS SUPER SONIC AND BEAT IBLIS WHICH CAUSES TIME TO RESET ITSELF AND CREATE A CONTINUOUS AND STUPID PARADOX!"

    Just fucking stupid.

    Then again, there was this
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SorZpbZHBHA...PL&index=11

This shows humans in Sonic ages before Sonic Adventure.

But thats the besides the point. Its the usage of humans I don't like. Mainly Sonic 06 here, but in general I get the feeling that Sonic is all out of place when humans are there. With Sonic Heroes, we seen the only modern 3D Sonic game without humans, and personally I prefered that feel in a sonic game. However with Unleashed bringing in more cartoon like humans. I personally I don't mind it so much. In fact it, it has some good advantages.

So I think Humans in Sonic is something Sega has already sorted, and done well (for a change)

Well, it's also the whole... Mary-sue kind of thing, in a way. I know it's not exactly the definition of Mary-sue, but it's just a cheap trick to try and give the people at home something to "relate to". It's supposed to inspire thoughts of "what if Sonic was real and in our world" - the same line of thought behind Chris Thorndyke and Princess Elise. You were supposed to meet Sonic through them.

Though NPCs aren't quite as attached to Sonic, it's still meant to be a point of reference for the player - But it ends up looking weird, because Sonic & Co. are the only characters "of their type". If you're a walking, talking animal in the Sonic franchise...
    • There's a 30% chance that you're a hedgehog.
    • You're friends with Sonic, and if you aren't friends with Sonic, you will be, eventually.
    • By proxy, you will be dragged in to an effort to save the world from Dr. Eggman
There are no Sonic-type characters just sitting around. The closest we got were the banners for that one girl in Speed Highway for SA1.

I think there could be a few more animal characters as NPCs in buildings and stuff so Sonic doesn't stand out, but I'm fine with pretty much everyone else being human. My only gripe is the style they used for the humans in Sonic Unleashed - it's not bad, necessarily, it just doesn't really match the game.

There's posters on some of the buildings for this... Sonic-styled character, but it's nobody that's ever been introduced in any of the games before. Most of the images of her are really close up, as I recall - you can only see part of her face and nothing else.

I'd go take a screenshot or something but nullDC has problems emulating SA1 correctly (you get stuck in the sewer where you get the light speed dash) and I lost SADX PC Disc 1 somewhere. I know a couple other people know what I'm talking about...

Of course- And the non-game media obviously doesn't apply to the games. This same media often depicted Eggman with glowy red eyes instead of his stylin' pince-nez specs, who physically re-engineered animals into robots instead of placing them inside them.

Granted, AoStH had humans and animals alike... As well as some weird characters whose species were indeterminable. Hm.

But the cartoons and comics hardly seem relevant to the games- Different continuities and all.

  10. Who else built all of Chemical Plant's Skyline, Casino Night's skyline, Carnival Night, and most other non-robotnik cities?

There has to be a different reason than just that they are housing robots...

This. Know why there are no humans in classic levels?

Because nobody wants to sip tea surrounded by killer robots.

I don't mind humans prowling around, neither do I mind animal NPCs either. I always thought humans existed, since Eggman is one, and there are a lot of cities in the games (Spring Yard, Starlight, Chemical Plant, Metropolis). We just didn't see them because they weren't important to the story back then.

    Check my blog for details.
I think, in all actuality, the "human vs. hedgehog" debate is rooted to the turn of story-based gameplay. If there isn't an intrinsic story, then there is no need for an excess of NPCs, so therefore you can maintain the game's "believability" with anthros and Eggman.

As of recent, it's as though a game cannot be made without story, due to current technologies. Since there is story, a base of NPCs must exist, and it is quite apparent that nobody wants to see a city full of anthros, so whammo! We've got useless people. I wouldn't expect to see this end anytime soon; story-based gameplay is here to stay, and even simpler games like Super Mario Galaxy have a basic story.

On the note of characters who have bearing on the story, I agree that as long as they are given decent characterization and don't take away from gameplay, they can be useful. Pickle was a good example.

    Also,
Sonic is a Celtic warrior, who fights in the nude to intimidate his foes.

I don't have a problem with human characters- just so long as they don't clash with the physical design of the animals. It's a whimsical world, so why should there not be whimsical people to join in on the fun? Unleashed did this nicely.

Speaking of Unleashed, they actually allude to the fact that Sonic and co are weird amongst humans, though most people will miss this. When you first reach Spagonia (360/PS3 ver), head to the end of the road you start on and talk to the little boy. His name is something like Eilios I think. Anyway, he's surprise by the appearance of Sonic, a guy with two tails and another guy with a mohawk.

  16. Perhaps there are more anthropomorphs like Sonic, but they keep to themselves. Sonic and his friends are the exception, preferring to live and explore the edges of the world, even the places where humans live.

I liked the way humans were handled in Sonic Unleashed. They were cartoony and funny, all with their own (somewhat) well written storylines and personalities. The lifeless NPCs in Sonic Adventure and '06 were boring and useless, Unleashed managed to impress me with it's take on NPC characters though, at least compared to other Sonic games.
