How would you redesign Sonic the Hedgehog?

  1. I said cel-shaded. That is NOT cel-shading.

It isn't? I thought cel-shading was using limited color-shade palettes to accentuate a given general color on a character.

I actually liked that shading in Sonic 4.

I didn't like the animations they gave Sonic though. I'd of prefer direct Unleashed animation rip offs only with the addition of wheel-o-feet.

The shading in Sonic 4 would be good, if they kept the level tiles consistent with it, and polished the shading up.

  5. Maybe if they added thick black outlines like in those shopped Heroes/Adventure 2 pics it could work...

  6. The problem is that none of that is a natural evolution of what we had in S3&K, or anything before it. The objects in Sonic games always had volume, smooth transitions from light to shadow, and absolutely no outlines. I don't see why anyone would want to change that. I honestly think that the Eggmobile, for example, looks much less detailed in this new "HD" version than it did in the LD pixelated days.

That's actually a nice look for him. Anything to add to or distract from his unchanging expression and weird mouth placement animations.

I don't really care much about natural evolution. If they think of a style that I like and they use it then I say go right ahead. If they made the game look like Wario Land Shake it or Rayman Origins I would totally not complain. I'd welcome it with open arms.

I'd love a new Sonic game with cel-shaded graphics. Plus with more polygons, it wouldn't look horrendous like Sonic Shuffle.

I feel that any of these would be a clear improvement over Sonic's modern design.

  12. The second one from the left could work if his nose was black. The rest, no.

And the one on the far right... I don't think I need to explain what's wrong with that one but I will anyway. His tail is in a very questionable position and he's lacking arms.
I really do hope that was a joke post.

    Yes to cel-shaded Sonic.

    And no to AoStH things.

And no to anything that makes Sonic or Tails look evil. Sonic's just not evil, except maybe Super Sonic, and Tails is supposed to be innocent and cute... Knuckles, however, is a different story.

It might be beating a dead horse to complain about how everyone but Sonic is neglected, but until SEGA fixes it, I think it's a horse worth beating.

Cel-shaded Episode 2 of Sonic 4 would be amazing. And as for natural evolution, SEGA hasn't been doing that for far too long and look at what happened when they tried.

Agree that Sonic shouldn't play like shit in 3D. Adventure is one of my favorite Sonic games for the story but the gameplay is somewhat ass because of how divided the characters are, it places unnatural limitations on character select that feels like a step backward from the formula set up in Sonic 3. Actually, it doesn't even feel like that, it feels like SEGA was on the right track at first, but then veered off course and crashed into a tree and had to wait for a toe truck for the next 12 years and then couldn't find their directions when they were moving again.

I don't think Sonic's "abusable" spindash was the problem in Sonic Adventure, since you could abuse the hell out of it in Sonic 2 (And I hate Sonic CD's spindash for trying to complicate things.) but rather that the levels are poorly designed for it. In fact, I think the levels are poorly designed in general. They're all just straight lines. But I'm just repeating what I've said a thousand times before; Sonic would benefit greatly if the developers just make a 3D Sonic game play like it were 3D. The reason I bring it up yet again is because it seems to me that Sonic's abilities (Old and new) suit a linear environment and I think that needs to change. I think the spindash needs to be used for gaining momentum and killing things obviously but Sonic needs a moveset suited more to exploring a large, more open world 3D environment and maybe if they develop this simple system, the "natural evolution of the series" can actually happen.

I wouldn't mind if Sonic looked like this, in fact I really like this design. Especially at 0:35, This should be Sonic's True look at age 19. His age should be varied from by his shortness and spikeyness of his quills. The shorter, the younger age he should be, while still having that same old face. Like at 0:17, I suggest he would be around like 14 or 15.

Also if he looked like this,

I don't mind the green eyes much when they aren't noticeable because they are green and thin.

So what dp you guys think of it?

Holy fuck....this is the first time I actually liked green eyes. Subtle, yet, perfect.

You know, instead of dividing up the eye into a green iris and black pupil, why not just make the whole eye green with a smaller white circle inside like the old Sonic look? What would that look like?

Besides that, I'd just change the curve of the brow into something more cartoony and less "mature".

His right ear reaches down too far. It's freakin' me out, maaan.

I remember seeing that on dA without the ring... Before that was added, it always made me think Sonic wanted to do some very naughty things to the viewer involving said finger. Seeing the green in his eyes be a little less "blurry" and a little more pronounced, but not to the degree they are now, with the same pupil size. I've never liked the "floppy dong quills" but his green eyes were actually a modern addition I liked, partly because cartoon characters with no iris look stupid in color. It works for black and white, and I think it's only still being done for the sake of tradition. (And because animators like taking shortcuts.)

Not sure. There's something wrong with that face structure. Still it's an improvement over the abomination that was so similar to this which was so popular a few months ago. A still from the back and side is needed as well.
