How would you redesign Sonic the Hedgehog?

To be fair, Knuckles wasn't part of the team. He was protecting Angel Island, no more, no less.

Well, he was supposed to be, anyway. There have obviously been exceptions (why the hell was he in Sonic 3D, anyway?), especially of late.

 

Yeah, but he was there since the games were good, so I'd let it slide. He's member #3 of the Sonic Dream Team. You even got to play as him in Sonic 2.

Still, I wouldn't be against him just hanging back at Floating Island while Sonic and Tails explored the world and defeated Dr. Robotnik.

 

At least he didn't seem all that happy about it.

Knuckles' backstory is an artifact: it involved him in the story of the current game, it gave him a motive to fight both Sonic and Eggman, and it let him be a loner. Now that he's been proven a popular character and he's been made making standard appearances, it's harder and harder to find plot excuses to keep him around.

Though considering it still gets stolen with him right next to it, I wouldn't be surprised if he has additional security, leaves the island for the greater good (Sonic Heroes), or just takes time off hoping it won't get stolen because fuck it.

 

Well now they seem to keep Knuckles aside for some of the bigger Sonic outings. He wasn't in Unleashed or Colors. Hell Amy wasn't even in Colors (I'm talking about the Wii version, forget the DS version with the"OH HAI SAWNIK ME AND TEH CHAOTIX WERE JUST IN TEH NEIGHBORHOOD" stuff).

In fact Colors handled the character cast perfectly. Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, and Robotnik's minions for shits and gigs. Just like AoSTH. Good stuff.

 

I agree with you on that one. I'd perfectly happy with the series if it was just Sonic, Tails, and Robotnik. I can live with some of the other characters too (namely, Knuckles and Blaze) but the rest I don't really even pay attention to anymore.

I always wondered.....what would Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts look like today in 2D/3D/whatever?

I've always wanted to see an adventure-styled version of the trio. Plus, it'd make me long for a game where they finally show up as actual side-characters. God, Scratch and Grounder working with/fighting with Orbot and Cubot would make it perfect.

But yeah, I loves me a new version of those guys, if only to see if they'd look decent with an adventure-styled redesign(or worse/more hillarious).

Redesign? I'd much rather "undesign" him back to SA1 or SA2. His voice didn't suck, he could do spin dashes, and he had badass Soap shoes. Adventure-style Sonic will always be the "real" Sonic to me.

 

I'd have to agree with n00neimp0rtant. He also didn't have that stupid mouth-on-the-side animation.

 

And yet that is one of the reasons why Unleashed Sonic is starting to grow on me. Sonic looks retarded with a center mouth IMO. His mouth on the side allows for Sonic's smirk to look much more cocky for some reason, and I like that.

I don't want to see as much of a redesign of the character anymore as I want to see a redesign of his moveset. Rather a de-design of his moveset. Sonic has a crouch button now. What do you do with that? Simple, add the fucking spindash back. It may have been abusable as all hell in Sonic Adventure, but that was in part due to the fact that you didn't have to rev it up like in the classic games. But now you can since he can crouch, and I don't see why they don't. And the crouch button can act like the down button in classic Genesis games as well. Get rid of the fucking sliding and let Sonic roll again. Seriously, it's the same damn thing, only one doesn't let you gain momentum down a ledge.

Also give him back some of the control that was lost since SA in 3D environments. Colors Sonic and Unleashed Sonic control like ass in 3D, and they need to fix that. Also Adventure's jumping felt better for some reason. Put that back in.

Oh ya, and get rid of grinding. It's useless.

I can't disagree more. It makes him look that much more stupid. I don't mind if his mouth moves from one side to the other to convey his ever-present cockiness, but keep the damn mouth centered so he can better convey other emotions besides "Look at me! I'm a big cocky douche with a deformed mouth orifice!"
