Hi everyone, long time no see !

    Here's the story :
Me and other hacking fellows are searching for a solution to host our hacking notes about Shining Force games.
I also think it could be quite convenient to store patches and roms etc. in the same place, exactly like you guys do on the Sonic Retro Wiki, with no problem so far.

    So :

    1) what is the exact purpose of Sega Retro ?
Can it host that kind of hacking stuff for non-sonic games ?

    2) I also see that you know use Mercurial to host disassemblies :
Do you plan to host non-sonic games on it in the future ?
Does it have to be discussed in another thread ?

    Thanks,

    Wiz

The idea of Sega Retro is to document everything related to Sega. It's very open-ended - the company history is long and varied and events constantly change. It's already physically bigger than Sonic Retro, but the potential is there to be hundreds of times the size - what holds it back from massive growth is the fact only a small handful of people are working on it and we can only go so quickly.

Hacking information is welcome. All information is welcome. The whole purpose of the wiki is to collect information.

I'm not at all keen on the idea of hosting ROM hacks or stuff of that nature though. I feel the goal should be to document Sega, not the Sega fan community and what they produce. If it's content which helps further understanding of Sega games then I'm all for it, but if it ends up being hacks like say, Sonic Boy in Monster Land... I'm less keen. I think there are better places for that sort of thing.

I can't speak for Sega game-related repositories. All I know is that there are many, many games which would qualify and I wouldn't want to try and organise it.

As with almost everything Sega Retro-related though, uploading content onto the wiki is pretty much like dumping it on a pile for later. There's absolutely no guarantee that it would be organised and grouped together in a logical place straight away. Sonic Retro already has the categories and templates to deal with hacking - Sega Retro does not (yet).

We already have one non-Sonic game on Mercurial (Ristar). More disassemblies would be very welcome. I was thinking of doing a Golden Axe one myself one day.

Fan-made stuff isn't really a good fit for Sega Retro, but hacking notes should be fine as long they're good.

Thanks for the quick answers guys,

New question in return, about Sega Retro :
At the moment, our notes really are WIP obscure notes and we need a way to share them as is first, to work together on them, to enrich/reorganize/polish them.
Will you accept that we create pages for such kind of working purposes ?

    Welp, this.
Wikis are, by their very nature, "shitty first drafts." It's understood that you have to start somewhere. Don't sweat it.

:D Ok great ! Thanks again, I'll let you know if we decide to go that way.

We'll certainly have more questions about Mercurial and the working method surrounding the disassemblies, but I'll open a new thread in the Technical Discussion forum.
