    Re-posting because I can. :v:

I edited a shade or two of the right vine and did a tiny bit of editing with it to see if it'd look right.

So yeah, imma continue working on it, but I'll have it ready eventually.

I think you all forgot an object: the automatic door.

Interestingly enough it uses the animated palette of the lava.

OP updated with WIP status for T.O. and ancara's pieces.

Thanks for pointing that out nineko, we'll get that added to the Database and put into the OP so people know about it.

I don't want to go out from my jurisdiction with this post, but I wanted to remember to test-object that the rock gets broken into six 16x16 parts when Sonic jumps on it. I don't know if you guys are going to add more animation frames or whatever, I just thought to post this pic as a reminder:

I think a more S3 approach should be used on the rock. Instead of square blocks when you break it, maybe more round broken rock looking pieces?

Yeah, we could do that, but we'll have to figure out what it'll look like when it happens. Given the angular nature of the rock I would say that it breaking in a bunch of thin cubes with rounded edges would make the most sense instead of round rocks coming from it.

Then it could be an idea to do the rock in 3D and break it to get all the rotations right. As soon as it looks good, trace it over the animations with 2D art.

It wouldn't necessarily need to be done like that, but yeah, that's a possibility.

Just to be easier at first, why not take the 16x16 blocks and make them spin like in s3. Or not, because it's almost given that the full S3 approach would be better.

Just to give a rough example of the Sonic 3 break style might look with this rock.

I believe the way the breaking rocks in Sonic 3 worked is that everything simply breaks into smaller semi-round stones regardless of what it is that's breaking (the classic little square disintegration is still used on some things but not rocks). So with that in mind, I would propose a rock shaped like one of these to be used when a rock is broken. Doesn't have to be this, but it's an idea.

Seconded. Sonic 3's method looked better than Sonic 2's overall, but we're not limited by hardware anymore, we can do more creative things with the break. Personally, I think broken bits based off the actual shape of the rock sprite itself looks the best. Likewise, it looks familiar enough to Sonic 2's method to be recognized, but it has been expanded in a lovely way beyond the original limits of the game.

We have the technology. We can make it better, stron--*shot*

I think this might be another case where a 3D model would come in handy, for making the rotating pieces.

I'd be entirely happy if they didn't spin. Having them simply break apart feels more classic.

...Then let's break it into squares instead? =\

I'm saying it wouldn't really add anything. I not against spinning, it's just not needed in my opinion.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Sonic 2 HD Flash Edition.
