  1. do you think that hidden palace zone is a hidden zone accessible through a secret pathway or just a regular level, if the zone is indeed included in the final game?

Um.......seriously, do you realize that Sonic 2 came out onto the market in 1992?

There's a way to get the HPZ in the final.....use a GameGenie or an Action Replay Cheat to get there. the zone itself is there, but the sprites (most of them) have been removed.....one more thing, you'll need debug.

If you want to play the HPZ from the beta, download the ROM.

And by the looks of it, HPZ doesn't seem to be very hidden......I mean, from the screencaps I've seen (here on the site), HPZ didn't seem to be "hidden." But Simon lists the zones as follows:

    Normal Gameplay Order:
    -Neo Green Hill Zone
    -Chemical Plant Zone
    -Hill Top Zone
    -Green Hill Zone

Accessible only through level select cheat:

    -Wood Zone
    -Metropolis Zone
    -Hidden Palace Zone
    -Oil Ocean Zone
    -Dust Hill Zone
    -Casino Night Zone
    -Genocide City Zone
    -Death Egg Zone

I think you missed the point, Dr. K. The question simply was, had HPZ been part of the Sonic 2 Final version, would it have been just a regular level in-line with all the other zones, or a special bonus level?

Personally, even though a lot of people seem to like to THINK it could be a bonus/secret level, I'd have to say that it really probably isn't. Because Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 didn't even touch upon "hidden bonus levels", so I wouldn't think it'd be part of Sonic 2's design.

I used to toy with the possible time travel ideas, but if they WERE to be various time versions of themselves, why were there seperate zone names? In Sonic CD, you just had Palm Tree Panic 1P, 1, and 1F, right?

So, ultimately, I'd say it was just a level. Something bad happened there though. (See "Y.N. is a possible racist" topic?)

Yea, but did you froget the thing at the end of HPZ where it says "Special Bonus" ? I think you have to have a game genie and debug mode and place that buggy Dr. Robonik canister, and once you set t3h animals free, scores come up, there you see it.

    1. It's called "Perfect Bonus"

    2. you get a Perfect bonus by getting all the rings and destroying all the robots in a zone.

    Nice try though ;)

ALSO, I believe Craig Sitt did mention that Hidden Palace was a secret zone. He said it was somewhere in the beginning of the game that you unlocked it but he couldn't remember how. And I don't feel like digging up the interview to find it

Slight correction, it's just rings. The game has a counter for each act that equals how many rings are placed in the level. Every time you get a ring that was originally placed into the game, this counter decreases by one. If it equals 0 when you finish the act, you get the 50k. I've personally done it both by killing all badniks, and leaving some behind. But other than that you're exactly right.

I'm one of those who believe that HPZ was meant for Tails. The lives box at the beginning was Tails' head. But Tails wasn't even playable alone in the beta. Maybe it was some sort of turn taking system where Sonic had his stages and Tails has his. Maybe Tails was originally designed to be the "Guardian of the Master Emerald". But no more on that breakable rock (I know you'll bring that up). But according to some comic scans I've seen (never seen a Sonic Comic other than scans), Tails was the destined to be the Chosen one and had a connection with the emeralds. I know nothing about the comics, but they don't seem to be connecting to the games either. Confusing.
