    Whatever catches my fancy
So that we can actually SEE the tiles in question, I suggest that you do the following:
    • Download GSavestate.
    • Use it to open a savestate of Green Hill Zone.
    • Go to the VDP tab, click on the Patterns & Sprites subtab.
    • Right-click on the first line and hit "Save all to bitmap...". Save it.
    • Open the bitmap in an image editor and crop out the unnecessary tiles. Then, enlarge the remaining tiles and save it to a PCX.
    • Upload it to an image host somewhere.
    • Post it here.
There are probably better ways of doing this, but this is the best I can do right now.

After looking through GHZ and my memory, I think those are truly unused.

Why researchers don't look the VDP memory? unused Tiles can be loaded in levels.

And also, I Think I found the "Let's Go!" text in Spring Yard Zone before look in the sites, I just took a look at the VDP memory, they are the first tiles loaded. Strangely, when placed in SYZ, they use a Shifting "Red-To-White-And-White-To-Red" Pallete. Not the Blue, like showed in Sonic Cult.

Probobly just the wrong pallet line. View it under the other GHZ pallets.

No, they genuinely aren't used, and they use (to my knowledge) the correct pallet line in that shot. They seem to be bits leftover of a 'trim' to the regular GHZ walls, similar to what is seen underground in GHZ Act 2 in the MS/GG version.

I actually thought everyone knew about this, but it seems not, so good job bringing it up for the people who didn't, Weird Person.

Where... where have I seen those? They look like the same times of the edge of that "Let's go!" sign. Good stuff, Weird Person!

There's more lost GHZ graphics than those, can you find them?

Hint: The old totems (well known) and some parts of a small checkered tower or something, both using a different palette that no longer exists (which seems to be like Aquatic Ruin's but without the red tones used for the flowers).

    =P

I think I found those very things in TLP once, so I'm guessing that's just uncompressed art that was either cut or unused.

Good find! So has anyone got an idea of what they are used for?

There are also 16x16 tiles that use this art. I will post a screenshot of what I think they may have been used.

    Edit:

As you can see, the patterns fit perfectly.

Hmm. Somehow reminds me of GHZ act 2 from the SMS/GG version of Sonic 1.

Hmm... looks like a type of roller ramp, like in Star Light Zone, but it's a Green Hill Zone version. Perhaps meant originally to create, to-an-effect, squared loop-de-loops? Then perhaps that got scrapped because they didn't wanna program new collision for a ne, square loop-de-loop... okay, now I think I'm just surmising too much, sorry. >.<

Does it not have its own collision already?

    Who knows?
    can't they be lazy? :P

And also, I Found Ballz animations in the VDP Memory, but it was alredy covered, so I didn't said nothing.

And also, they can be just crap that was discarded because most of the Art of GHZ isn't very similar to that art, and would look weird see that in GHZ.

I'm sure it does. All 16x16 tiles have collision assigned to them. Although I am not particularly familiar with the S1 collision array, so I cannot say offhand weather the assigned collision is correct.
