Orengefox: I just noticed the EPROM windows in those photos are not covered with an opaque tape (like electrical tape). You may want to cover them with electrical tape in order to prevent UV rays from accidentally wiping them. (At least the ROM images are dumped, so they could always be reprogrammed if necessary.)

While we're on this, I've heard there are subtle differences between the Game Gear and Master System layouts, particularly in Green Hills Zone, to take into account the differing screen resolutions. We could use those too.

(actually this applies to most prototypes - it would be nice to make direct comparisons between, say, all our Chaotix prototypes).

I would dig up the quote but they mean the level designed area is there, the spot where the mock up was taken.

I'm not sure if this has been already said, but in Zone 03, Act 01, which is the UGZ level played in the auto demo, you can actually jump into the ceiling and keep jumping once you reach the top, run right, jump, and discover the rest of the level.

xD I'm actually working on a disassembly of the game myself too. :v: I'll probably stop working on mine though.

...give me time, the tile pixel format is horrendous.

Looking at a savestate, it looks like there is monitor art loaded. I wonder if there's any working monitors (or any other objects) in there?

    Whee.

And no, I didn't figure out how to rip them automatically, 'cause I'm dumb.

    EDIT: Green Hill 1.

EDIT 2: I continue to be a dumb. Green Hill 3.

Yeah I noticed the monitor in the tile viewer, but it seems to load in on the sega screen and the opening and the title screen which it does not in the final game. Pretty odd

The giant palmtrees are very nice, actually!

Thanks for the maps GoldS :)

And here's Green Hill Act 2. Lots of places to go above the screen and crash the game. Plus, some of those rings at the top aren't even visible on screen.

Note that long string of rings, which was broken up into two sections in the final version. Obviously the floating platforms haven't been coded yet. There are a lot of other changes too, though the basic layout seems to be in place already.

EDIT: Sky High 3. Not much to see, but here's the map anyway.

The content in this early prototype almost ruins the final product for me. This version of Green Hills Zone is so much better, and so many gimmicks/decorations were cut that it pisses me off in how empty and dull the final was. I already felt extremely iffy about how unfinished the final felt, this just seals it: I'm pissed at Aspect for their sloppy development and wasted potential.

there are similarities but it looks to me like they re-worked the levels from scratch. It's not as simple as replacing a tileset, anyway.

Definitely agree - each version has definitely been based on a similar structure, but the actual specifics of the layout have been redone completely. Some bits are longer, shorter, taller or just removed entirely from the final layout.

Oh wow, well it looks like someone beat me to it...

It's really interesting how the layouts look far more complete or arranged correctly than they do during gameplay. They come off as rather messy and all over the place, until you have the chance to see it entirely from a distance =%

This is the only kind of candy that keeps bringing me back to retro. Keep up the good work guys !

it's nice to see that so much cool stuff has been done with this game so far, keep up the good work guys :D

I'm hopeless when it comes to this kind of thing - so thanks, Markey, for making it so that the less technically-inclined of us can play around with the game!

It really is a buggy mess, playing it is almost impossible without it crashing constantly. It's nice to actually be able to see the levels maps clearly now. I find it interesting that the beta GHZ was basically thrown out and remade, yet there are still some similarities with the layouts, particularly with Act 3. It's a shame though, because some aspects of the beta seem nicer than the final version.

The fact that GHZ is by far the most complete level here, as well as being the one featured in the earliest magazine articles prior to the game's release, suggests to me that it was originally going to be the first level of the game (and was obviously the first one to be worked on). If that's the case, I don't really get why the level order was changed in the final - especially considering how evil that Underground boss is, it's way too hard for the first boss in the game.

I feel the same way, it's a shame they had to cut back and simplify the detail in stages for what ever reason.
