There are some who believe that GCZ was worked on after our beta and there are some who don`t. It is unknown how much of the level was made but personally I think the level was cut from production after the name was placed in the level select.

    Let`s review...

1.) No screenshots or mock-ups of the level were ever released. If the level was worked on Sega would have released screenshots of the level which they didn`t.

2.) The level occupies Slot 9 in the beta. When accessed in the final it uses EHZ`s pallete, level layout and tiles and you fall until you die.

Wz occupied Slot 2 when it was removed. The pallete however was not disposed of and loads up when it is accessed in the final. Slot 9 loads up EHZ`s pallete when accessed. GCZ didn`t have an original pallete in the beta and it doesn`t seem to have one in the final. If the level was made it was probably extinguished before Wz was.

In short, I think GCZ never made it off the ground.

Do you agree? Post your opinions if you wish.

I think Sega deleted it before our beta, but forgot to take the name out. According to your theory, since GCZ was using EHZ's palletes, mabye it was EHZ act 3 0.o.

Nah, There is another empty level that uses the same pallete. Where did this EHZ act 3 thing come from anyway?

There was a lost level 1 in the game, that can be accessed via Game Genie or hacking. Accessing it would play Emerald Hill Muisic, and it would be a genocide city type level, empty. The the bg crap looked like the grass from the tiles in EHZ. Some people thought that Sonic 2 was going to have 3 acts in each zone, like Sonic 1, but Sega must have cut it to 2, becuase 3 would be too much for the game to hold.

    Probably from that.

Perhaps GCZ was originally intended to be the "final level" in Sonic 2. Like Scrap Brain was in Sonic 1. Scrap Brain does resemble a city that performs the total annihilation of an entire race. Perhaps GCZ was intended to have elements from Scrap Brain.

  6. what's the code for this 'lost level'?

and select Green Hill Zone Stage 0 to access the lost level. Or in ESE, just change the level pointer to 01 00 or 01 01.

ESE is evil for things like that. It copies a crapload of data to the end of the ROM to make one tiny change. You'd be better off consulting Nemesis' guide and editing the pointer yourself.

I think people, when making up GCZ theories, go a little too far... Genocide City is probably just a name the programmers liked for the level, the level probably didnt have to do with Genocide :P

Or maybe they planned to make a level with that name, but changed their mind?

The name is the only clue as to what the level might have looked like. And since there isn`t any screenshot or mock-up of Genocide City, anything ranging from concentration camps to science labs are acceptable since there is nothing we have that shows what the level looked like.

Hmmm....this makes me wonder when you said, "concentration camps." Perhaps, SEGA of Japan thought up Genocide City Zone. Know why I think this? Because during World War I and World War II, Japan was against us. So, maybe there`s still a leftover grudge from when we kicked their asses. So they thought up Genocide City Zone, where, quite possibly, Americans, Jews and Englanders were tortured.

But, it probably got nixed since their target audience isn`t supposed to see things like that.

Any questions, comments and/or concerns with this?

I don't think the Japanese have left over grudges or anything...

What about Bionic Commando? Isn't that made by Konami or Capcom (I might b e totally wrong here), and those are Japanese boss, and the last boss is, Hitler.

And American Jews or whatever were never torture, only those from overseas.

And this is a childs game.

I do like the Scrap Brain like level theory though, even though I can't get that far into Sonic 1...

Sega was known at the time to be more liberal then Nintendo. A good example would the first Mortal Kombat games. No censorship was in the genesis version. In the Snes version, The blood was changed to whitish "Sweat" and the fatalities were changed. It`s not too surprising to see the word "Genocide" in a Sega Made game.

I did read (according to my sonic The Hedgehog 1992 annual) that Genocide City zone was cut out because people disagreed with the name.
I theorize that it later became Metropolis Zone. At the time of our beta they copied the zone, called it MZ. Then, the deleted content of GCZ. Then, in our beta, the old level place holder is not removed.
If my theory is right, they did the same for Clock Ork.

I think "CLOCK ORK" was changed due to lack of W :P

American Grudges? You're talking about Naka here.... *shot*

Seriously, I also think it was removed before our Alpha(Beta) was compiled. It was in te proccess of it, at least. Maybe our answers would coem if we came across an earlier version.... but that's unlikely.

Wait.... here's a question that just popped in my mind:

Where DID our Beta come from anyways? I mean, beyond pirate games.... who originally dumped it and got ahold of it?

If with "people" they meant part of the development team, it's the same reason they changed any other level names....

    Anyway... Scan, please?

EDIT: Oops, sorry for double posting, I had each part of the thread in a different window and I thought yadda yadda blah blah etc etc...

Why not just make it so the W and J and Q and all the other missing letters weren`t....missing? Wouldn`t that have solved the problem as well? Just enable the W so they could keep the name, "Clock Work."
