Today's weird find



The US VHS release of Speed Racer: The Movie (which isn't technically a movie but that's another story) came with a $5 rebate offer for Speed Racer in The Challenge of Racer X, a game that wasn't released (though you could use it on Bubsy or Hardball III)

Oh, that reminded me about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Crossroads of Time. Couldn't edit the wiki at the time, then forgot about it.

I think this was in the US manual (can't actually remember now);



And here's the figure. although I'm not sure if it's inscope as it was a mail-in and not included in the box.

 

Probably a copy of an older action figure with a different head to save money.

Sonic Retro existed when Sonic Chronicles was released, but it's taken until today for this edition to be acknowledged. Look, a special watch.

I think this is a special edition that was only available to "Sega Club" members. We know of plenty of Sega clubs from the 1990s, but apparently there was a short-lived French one between about 2008 and 2010. All managed online, as you would probably expect.

It was a system where games would come with scratchcards, which would net you virtual "rings" that could be spent on special items. It's a tale lost to time:


this is the only evidence I could find that such a thing made it to market. This means there's probably a whole bunch of exceedingly rare French Sega merchandise that nobody knows exists.


So if you were thinking that everything magically gets documented now that the internet exists, uh yeah, it doesn't. Plenty still slips under the radar.

 

Exciting registration card news


Initial batches of the 32X came with a gold one.

And if you're thinking "isn't this a bit late for Sega Visions", you're right - these forms were taken out of newer bundles, because the publication went out of print.

 

Case in point: I have this, but I never bought the Genesis version of Eternal Champions. The Sega CD version did not come with this poster, which is the version of EC I have.

 

Furu Furu Chu has a page now.

Turns out, this was a whole SERIES of mascot characters. With lots and lots of merchandise.
There's a seventh one, Grape & Soda (グレープ＆ソーダ), but I can't find that one now.

 

Looks like a hellish carsmash of suzuka yoshida and lunlun yamamoto's styles (basically Sonic-lite)





Makes me wonder if there was some strange trend during the 2000s involving vibrant, confident styles? I see it on and off from time to time.

Like a Dragon is coming to Roblox, a game I know nothing about beyond "it exists". My instinct was to dump this in References to Sega/Video games, but I imagine it'll be quite substantial..?

Looks to be some promotional thing. I've seen a lot of that stuff on Roblox as of lately. Looks like other companies have caught on to its popularity.

Why on Roblox in the first place? Lately, the site has been broadening its demographic. Some of the things that they have done to do so include adding age-restricted voice chat and allowing users to set age requirements for their games.
