    Who published Sonic the Comic??

    "Flee---" erm

I noticed we didn't have a page on Sega Retro for Fleetway. There was one on Sonic Retro - it kinda sucks, but it's there. I thought I ought to fix Sega Retro's page.

The first thing to do was check the internet didn't get it wrong. Spoilers: the internet got it wrong - strictly speaking there was never a period where STC was published by (just) "Fleetway". It was "Fleetway Editions" until 1996, "Egmont Fleetway" until 2001, and "Egmont Magazines" until the end of the run (2002). Egmont Magazines became "Story House Egmont" in 2021 - this matters because they went back to publishing Sonic magazines, albeit crap ones. As it's a UK company, all the name change dates can be confirmed through Companies House.

Turns out the history of "Fleetway" is a bit wibbly wobbly: Fleetway Editions was a merger of two comics companies: "Fleetway Publications" (bought by Egmont from Robert Maxwell (of "falling off a boat" fame) in 1991) and "London Editions" and is a distinct corporate entity to either of these. So yes it's Fleetway, but is a different Fleetway to the other Fleetway, except not, except yes. It's probably quite telling that they didn't want to put the Fleetway name on the cover, and then push the Egmont brand instead.

Where to the rights lie now? Well it seems(?) that everything Fleetway-related prior to this merger went to Rebellion Developments in 2016. So in a sense they own Fleetway, while Egmont probably still own parts(?) of Sonic the Comic. But that's just a guess.

Anyway none of this really matters but if you were thinking this was invented by the same people as 2000AD (and by extension, Judge Dredd), it was but it wasn't.

Finally some more proof of it - even if just in black and white, besides the cover - in Amusement Journal 91 (2008-11).

There is an interview with things said. Apparently AM2 wanted this to be very casual-focused, and they start the piece off by having to acknowledge that Sega did already have two football games on the market (WCCF and of course AM2's own Virtua Striker), plus the need to make it different from them. Other than that reason, why they then seemingly went ham with ALL.Net online features even before scrapping it, I don't quite know - you'd think the average person walking into an arcade to play a UFO Catcher or two wouldn't bother.

I've been on a bit of a scanning spree, all of my remaining 1991 issues, and 1992 issues of CTW up to May 1992 have been scanned. A bit burned out now, so might be a while until I get back to this (did I ever mention how much I hate scanning?). These are a must read for anyone interested in the European trade back then. I think I'm up to 73 issues scanned, versus zero issues scanned by the rest of the world. That might sound like a lot, but the "Weekly" part of the title might give it away, this ran for 880 issues, so we're not even at 10%. Time Extension did have an article on this not too long ago, so it would be nice if others joined in with this project, but I don't have high hopes.

2 years after it stopped getting updated Discmaster has been relaunched as Discmaster 2. Along with a load of search and file support improvements this means that they'll be able to add additional content from now on.

For those that don't know, Discmaster is basically a search engine for searching through the files on software discs that have been uploaded to archive.org (the ones that have been processed at least), along with converting them to viewable formats. It's a fantastic resource.

Back in 2014 (!!) I ran into one of Sega Toys' best inventions:

"Homestar R2-711", an indoor planetarium shaped like R2-D2, painted in the colours of the 7/11 chain. Obviously I had to go hunting through the Homestar range (as it stood at the time) to see if I find something even better, and uh... no, I couldn't. And I haven't looked back on this stuff since.

Today I was looking for something totally different this afternoon and bang

One of 200 limited edition BUMP OF CHICKEN branded Homestars.

Sadly it's a Japanese rock band who released a single around this time called "Planetarium". I was hoping for a starfield full of chicken nuggets - so close!

Kinda neat but not worthy of it's own topic: I found out that the way the Xband lets a lagging system catch up if the two consoles desync is by rapidly alternating on and off the register that triggers interlaced mode on the machine that is ahead. This has the effect of slowing down system to sync them back up.

Nice, I went to see how we dealt with other test software such as SG-1000 M2 Check Program and Color & Switch Test, but then saw that we don't have pages for them. Of course, this one is also complicated by the fact that it could be meant for Mega CD, Saturn, or maybe even some arcade or karaoke hardware.

Rock Paintings/Hot Hits is listed in the CD audio releases category, so I guess it fits there for now, but we probably need a test software category for these internal test tools.

That's my CD-G Test Disc Ver. 1.0 055 on the archive. Redump staff have been debating whether I should submit it there as Saturn or Audio CD (though redump doesn't dat the CD+G portion anyway)... It was sold in a Sega Saturn category (YJA listing), but I don't get the impression that the seller knew much about it. They had previously sold another copy numbered 054 (YJA listing). There's also a 8cm Ver. 2.0 they've tried to sell for vastly more (YJA listing, this archive shows it's been relisted several times). Let me know if there's any more info I can provide.

    https://archive.org/details/Amusement-Journal-2007-07/Amusement Journal 2007 07/page/n3/mode/2up
I spotted in this the recently scanned July 2007 issue of Amusement Journal that some of Sega's games were being highlighted as "ALL.Net" and others "ALL.Net P-ras". We only had a single ALL.Net page - it didn't take long to realise we were missing something.

And to my horror, we were missing a Pengo game. This is Pengo! Online - it's Pengo, but online.

"haven't we seen this before" - not entirely. Ge-Sen Love: Plus Pengo! had big, eight-player Pengo, but it wasn't online. This online version came out in 2020.

    https://apm.sega.jp/ver3/title/pengo/

The problem was that we were treating all these ALL.Net brands as the same, but thing, but they're kind-of not. All are online-centric services invented by Sega, but whereas the first two still rely on physical DVDs, recent versions of ALL.Net P-ras Multi are entirely digital, meaning games are downloaded. And there's a whole bunch of them, many not made by Sega.

In our defense, we did have a list, but I don't think we fully understood it. There is also "version 2" and "version 3" of the Multi system with different libraries of games

    https://apm.sega.jp/
(the difference isn't exciting - version 2 uses RingEdge 2 hardware, while version 3 uses ALLS UX)

It also means they can sell you generic cabinets.

This isn't a spooky mystery, but we didn't have it on the wiki (and Wikipedia's page is poor too).

Those generic cabinets only came into use with the third version, though I believe the base design was first used for Soul Reverse. It was also supposed to get another conversion of Fantasy Zone by M2 under the "Sega Classics" brand (which was announced at JAEPO 2020 alongside several other titles including their Aleste sequel Senjin Aleste; albeit without the Aleste name attached at that time), but both seem to have been quietly dropped post-COVID.

After all those early titles where they roped in some indie developers and big fighters, Success now look like the main company still supporting the service besides Sega themselves (and even then they're just updating legacy Virtua Fighter, with no indication the new RGG project will be on there) - they even quietly put out a previously cancelled puzzle game originally intended for Examu's shortlived eX-Board hardware on it late last year.

Today on uurrrrrrrrrhhhhhh i hate this

I noticed this morning that a Burning Rangers album had been released back in November, and we didn't have a page:
Burning Rangers: SegaSaturn 30th Anniv. Album
now we do. But while I was adding credits, one name confused me:

Today I learnt what a VTuber was. It's a (typically animated) character that Asian companies use to present things in streams. Think: Nintendo Direct but without actual humans.

    "Popona" is Sega's attempt:

Since 2018, Popona has been fulfilling this "VTuber" role for Japanese audiences. The reason I didn't know this (other than having "taste") is because she's mostly been associated with Phantasy Star, but I'm guessing there was some overlap. She will "graduate" this year and apparently cease to exist.

So another pseudo-mascot to add to the pile.

There's a whole load of stuff from that neck of the woods; House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn had one as well (why?), and Sega even made something called "DL-EDGE", which was used for several proto-VTuber things including the first series of "live anime" Minarai Diva.

It seems those efforts were all initially driven by the mysterious "RED WORKS" team that existed at Sega R&D1 (2011-2015)/Sega Interactive R&D1, i.e. when Sega started producing animation projects again after splitting it all off into Marza and washing their hands of that previously mentioned Animanium software during the 2000s.

After they entered another reshuffling period around 2018/19 I'm not entirely sure what happened to it all though - by the time of 2021 some people from there appear to have ended up in the Sega Development Technology Division, judging from this piece that mentions one of the developers associated with it making "S-FIRE" augmented reality prize figures, and another having a patent assigned for the "Prize ON" app linked to newer UFO Catchers (two other mysteries not documented yet).

  17. Vtubers aren't just a thing companies use. It's an entire livestreaming subculture. There's independent vtubers, vtubers managed by specialized agencies. It's a whole big thing.

I was surprised how difficult it is to find software that can convert these, not only on modern Windows, but also using contempory software on VirtualBox and PCem. Most of these use Multi Game Doctor 2 format, but the ones ending in .1, .2, .3 are multi-part Super Magic Drive files. I managed to create a python script (with the help of the Grok AI - I'm not a programmer) that can batch convert and combine these old disk copier formats.

    Readme;
    Python script code (might be a bit bloated as I asked the AI to iterate on it quite a bit);
    Code (Text):

    117.
This converts all of the files into working binaries except for YuYu Hakusho, which crashes on the Sega screen, maybe a bad dump, or some obscure format. The missing game was the unreleased Combat Aces, which is presumably where the existing dump originated. I haven't looked deeply into whether any of these are unknown prototypes, but some seems to be hacked (The Great Circus Mystery has even been edited to include the name of the person who "fixed" it).

Many of these are prototypes, but all the ones with big differences that I noticed already seem to be known, there may well be some more minor protos to be found, I haven't looked into them myself. Another interesting thing with these is that quite a few have scene intros from the groups that released them.

The python script worked with most of these too. Sub-Terrania doesn't boot, although the header looks good. RMK-CHAV.SMC (Chaves) doesn't seem to be a Genesis game looking at the header (and .SMC is for Super Magicom, a SNES copier, although there was and adapter to copy MD games, and some did working ones did have .SMC extensions). snk-bubs (Bubsy) doesn't look like a legitimate rom either as it mentions lzh compression in the header, but I couldn't decompress it.

For those that don't want to convert the files themselves, here's the converted roms.

Edit: Extracted Bubsy II, it's identical to the retail release.
