    I don't really like the 3D rings that have floated around the internet for ages—they're way too shoddy looking. I think it's best to redraw them as you've been doing with the character sprites. Vincent's doesn't look too bad; even Blue Streak's looks pretty good. They're both better than those 3D rings, though. :P

  5. How is it that we know they're supposed to be flat on the inside? It's not exactly clear from the original sprite and all of the CG sprites posted so far are round. Also, the 3D games use rounded rings as far as I can tell, and I assume if Sonic Team intended rings to be flat they'd have modeled them that way. I know the large special stage ring in Sonic 1 is clearly flat on the inside, but that's the only exception I can think of at the moment. I think it's easier to create a rounded ring anyway.

    Edit: If the consensus is they should be flat inside I'll support that, but if we're taking votes I vote for rounded. Ultimately it may just come down to which one looks better when we have different animations.

    It would be kinda wierd if they intended the big ring to be flat on the inside, and the small ones to be any different (other than the size)...
     
  7. I read about the first nine pages or so and thought, hey, I'll try my hand at Robotnik, but lo and behold, you've already done one. Well, here's a vector-based one instead of a raster one (you guys are shooting yourselves in the foot by doing raster), and yeah, it's pretty bad.

  8. I know this isn't flat on the inside, but I did it earlier and I just want an opinion on the size and the shading.

    Also, can someone confirm if we're got to be limited to 256 colors or if this project will support higher bit depths? I've been assuming 256 colors when making these images, but if it's more then it's nice to know I can use other colors.

    EDIT: Trunks, the rings I'm drawing are vector based, and I assume Vincent and ICEknight are working with vector formats too. I've just exported bitmaps for easy posting and viewing.

    I think the vector ring is lacking a bit of shininess. It doesn't really look like it was made of gold...

    Yeah but look at the amount of time it's taken to get these few sprites, and has anyone even started to code anything? I know I will have lost all faith in community if one of you say you're coding something and it ends up being some shitty MMF or GM game.

    I've been looking into modifying the Gens VDP, however it's coded in x86 assembler which means it's a little above my ability... there is an already existant GensHD mod but I believe it imposes palette limitations on the tiles and doesn't really have enough flexability for re-tiling a whole game.

    I think speed-wise everything is fine folks. Remember that Vincent is really the only one spear-heading the project at this time. There's really no rush.

    Speaking as someone who has been feverishly waiting for the English-language translation of Policenauts for around 6 years (and having bought 4 copies of the game, in the process), I don't know about you but I'm prepared to wait for HD Sonic 2.
