Couldn't you take this opportunity to add more frames to the animations of most objects? I mean, all the resolution in the world probably won't help much if the animation remains jerky.

Thank you guys! That was nice! :D

I didn't have a quite good working day due to the flight keeping me up for eleven hours, BUT I'll promise tomorrow I'll fix the last frame hands and maybe start the new one.

    Hey Nineko anche tu italiano?

Long live to Sonic HD!! ;)

They haven't been doing so due to the potential limitations of the emulator they're planning to use to overlay the graphics, if I remember right. Regardless, Vincent has also stated that he'll be doing the original frames first, and doing in-between frames later if it's warranted.

I think it would end up forcing the emulator to make more VRAM available =P

Though considering we are technically doing that anyway, I don't see the harm.

Edit: Note to self, post faster.

Since the resolution will be higher, the graphics will be the same size and the animation will look as jerky as in the original, not more.

Actually, even though it may be true, the bigger size just makes it more obvious.

No, the problem is that while we are replacing the graphics of the game in realtime, the game won't think to call for extra animations.

Hey, can't you edit the rom to add extra frames?

  9. Even if we can do more frames, creating new art to interpolate between the present sprites is not an easy task.

  10. Sorry to double post, but hopefully it's worth it.

Which do you like better, the left one or the right one? :P

These are both shown at 128 x 128, the HD size we're looking for. I couldn't get the method I used on the ring to work for the spikes it seems, so I took a very different approach and downloaded the CG modeling program Blender, took a crash course in simple modelling, and made this. It's not rendered CG, but a screenshot of a set of cones I made in the CG editor that uses the OpenGL lights in the development environment (not an actual rendered CG light source). This allowed me to keep the shininess of the CG look down because I think it would seem out of place if it were too shiny. If you still think it's too shiny, I can use cones with fewer faces to make it look like it's reflecting fewer colors and that might improve things a bit.

Before anyone complains that there's too much space between the two middle spikes, notice that the original image has just a single pair of spikes that is tiled twice (or more then twice in a few ingame instances). This means that whatever spikes we go with in the end, they should have the same ability to tile. Therefore I did not overlap the middle two. The original gets away with looking like it's overlapping because of the limited resolution, but I clearly can't get away with that trick here. I think it looks just fine and it'd probably be less obvious in the game when it's not against a black background and sitting in the grass or something.

Comments and feedback are appreciated as always. And now it's like 5:30 in the morning and I need some sleep.

    Nice spikes, Blue Streak.

    I did a little something:

I know a lot can be done with these, they were quickly rendered concepts. What does everyone else think?

Neo, when leaving feedback don't forget to specify what needs to be improved if you don't like it. Let's give anyone who contributes plenty of encouragement so that they'll want to improve upon their technique, just as Blue Streak has.

For something that has been so quickly rendered I think it's a splendid effort, although there needs to be much more detail.

I think it would be useful for everyone to remind themselves of the original concept art that inspired this project:

Notice in particular the level of detail for the tiles. As good as Blue Streak's spikes are (good job Blue Streak!) I think they perhaps could also use some more detail.

Ah, I see. More texture would make it look better. I'll see what I can do.

    More like this?

It's looking a lot better - I like how you used the grassy texture there, but I think you should sort the top part out; Remember, this is supposed to be GRASS he's running across, not an eaten away jigsaw puzzle :P

Wow, that looks really interesting Hitaxas. Perhaps try making the black shadow a little lighter. Definitely a vast improvement though, well done.

The spikes look nice (and almost CG-like), but it would have been easier to make simple 3D models, and it might have looked even a little better.

I think hqx4 wins here... Yours doesn't even look like grass anymore, even with real grass plastered over it. The shape was completely lost, and the lower shading looks way too artificial... I can't say I like it in the least, sorry.

Is there really nobody able to CG in here? I think we're really needing it now.

I don't think running a crappy photoshop filter and texturing it is going to handle our level art to an adequate extent. It needs to be stylistically recreated—higher-resolution material representing the original features of the environment, whilst at the same time not taking away from the original feel of the level.

    For example:

    vs

Make sense? The art isn't exactly the same, but it's instantly recognizable as the same style and area.
